Taxpayer millions went to a company that subcontracted with another firm operated by her spokesperson’s husband, records show

Kristi Noem’s $220 million ad spending blitz came under intense scrutiny from both Democrats and Republicans across two days of congressional hearings this week, with the secretary unable to explain how a company connected to her own spokesperson landed a lucrative taxpayer-funded project.

Last year, DHS hired a little-known firm to help produce a campaign that prominently featured Noem herself, including one ad filmed during the government shutdown with the secretary on horseback in front of Mount Rushmore. “Break our laws, we’ll punish you,” Noem says in the ad.

Most of that money — $143 million — went to a company that was created just 11 days before it was awarded the contract. On Thursday, after lawmakers grilled her for answers, Donald Trump said he did not sign off on the campaign.

In her testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, Noem said she doesn’t know where the contractor is based, if the company has even done work for the government before DHS hired it, or how the company ended up subcontracting a firm with direct ties to Noem’s office.

I get the feeling the DOGE didn't do a very good job at stopping fraud in the government.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Earlier last year, I watched all those assholes constantly repeat that phrase last year, especially Karoline Leavitt, that dweeb Mikey Johnson and that guy that looks like a squirrel with a shit-eating grin perma-planted on its face - Kevin Hassett - "waste, fraud and abuse", followed by an even bigger smile.

And it was quite obvious back then that they were quite full of shit and gleefully gaslighting the shit out of the reality-based community and loving every minute of their little games. Probably the most predictable thing ever.

"Waste, Fraud, and Abuse" is one of those Conservative mantras they use to justify their corruption, like "We must protect the children..."

I was job hunting during the doge apocalypse after a layoff, it was tough, so many people fired and looking at the same time. My dad had no sympathy, he kept telling me that it was all necessary, and said that I’d have no trouble because everyone I was competing against were useless government employees anyway.

I don’t talk to my dad anymore.

What?! No... No no no. The guy in charge of it seems so trustworthy.

Elon Musk is a Nazi here he is doing the salute

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What are you talking about. They did their job just fine. Waste, fraud, and abuse! I mean they talked about their objective all the time.

[–] RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

And don't forget giving Palantir access to govt databases(probably)

[–] Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk 48 points 1 week ago

So she steals $143m of public money and all she gets is a grilling from Congress.

Fucking weak

She's untrainable. We should take her to the gravel pit.

Considering the amount of publicity conservatives managed to generate around the story of fraud in Minnesota, this should be a like Christmas for the Democrats. It won't be, but it should be.

Well the DNC certainly wouldn't want to look rude by politically capitalizing on this, so instead they'll let us know they're "deeply concerned" and carry on with their day.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Honestly, they should propose sending ICE to raid and kidnap and terrorize.....at Noem's house(s).

I mean, that was their "logic" on sending in ICE to terrorize an entire city, after all.

I'm sorry but I have to give beastiality barbie props for being able to con Don. Granted it's my money but still...

Trump is super easy to manipulate. Just butter him up a little bit and he’ll do whatever you want

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

He sure is a buttery male.

I'll see myself out.

[–] DandomRude@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Is there anywhere you can bet that this obvious embezzlement of state funds will also remain completely without consequences?

Polymarket is out of the question, as Trump Jr. has a stake in the company.

[–] myrmidex@belgae.social 4 points 1 week ago

Good luck finding anyone willing to take that bet.

[–] etherphon@piefed.world 12 points 1 week ago

You can tell just by looking at some people that they are dishonest assholes, just by how they dress and present themselves, you can smell this lady coming a mile away, I wouldn't trust her to not steal the makeup at her Sephora job.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Didn't this just happen again, but the company was only 8 days old this time?

[–] Sprocketfree@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

Ahh this explains Minnesota. That fraud they were claiming was actually with ICE the whole time. I'm shocked, shocked I tells ya!

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 8 points 1 week ago

No shit they can't find it. She embezzled the money and hid it for that specific reason.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

She also took trump's order to shoot Americans in the face and gave that same order to the masked proud boys on the payroll.

Nuremberg 2 for everyone

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

What, no more cosplaying for ICE Barbie? No more bang plane?

😥

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

“My marriage is one thing and work is another. I don’t combine them.”

Which is why I put a bed in my work plane to bang my coworkers...

[–] aeration1217@lemmy.org 6 points 1 week ago

get to the bottom of it, they're not dead

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 3 points 1 week ago

For reference, about $4.5 million would be enough for you to retire right now and have expenses of about $150,000 a year. And that includes inflation.

You would never have to work again.

143m is missing... ... Of your taxpayer money.

Let that sink in.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

That's why she was fired, she probably didn't let Trump dip his beak.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

"Battered". I'm tired of these words being used this way. It just gets my hopes up only to be let down that they didn't mean it literally...

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Were you expecting a nice meal of tasty fried noem, maybe with an “Awesome Blossom” and sauce on the side?

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

I was thinking more along the lines of catching a beatdown but that works too.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

If they meant tempura, then deep-frying, that'd be an appropriate response. But that's not what happened.

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Claw it back.

[–] kittykillinit@lemy.lol -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just curious, are we blaming the families with $100m net worth for the damage they're causing, or are we still stuck on billionaires?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] kittykillinit@lemy.lol 2 points 1 week ago

Because morons think millions of dollars "is not a lot of money."
