"We apologize for the inconvenience this causes you."

Yes I'm sure you fucking do.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 135 points 3 weeks ago (9 children)

If they try this shit in my state, I’d fucking sue.

I had surgery BECAUSE it would let me change my drivers license. I paid $5500 as a broke college student because I was getting turned down for jobs with that stupid “F.”

I don’t understand how any of this is legal. The constitution prohibits “ex post facto” laws - how can you revoke someone’s documentation when they complied with the laws as they were at the time?

[–] CocaineShrimp@sh.itjust.works 115 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't understand how any of this is legal

That's the thing - It's not. They don't give a shit, and the judicial system isn't doing anything about it

[–] CainTheLongshot@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

And even if they did, it would take months, if not years, to resolve. Until then people will either be disenfranchised and can't vote or forced to update their ID's, which could also take months of paperwork to resolve.

This letter reads to me like it is someone from the Kansas executive branch (run by Democrat Governor Laura Kelly) legitimately apologizing that they are bound by Republican made, veto-overridden law to cause this inconvenience, but maybe I'm being too generous

[–] Throbbing_banjo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 3 weeks ago

That could be the case, I suppose. If they really wanted to be assholes about it, they could just not send anything at all. This at least explains how the recipient is effected and what they can/need to do

Oh, but they "apologize for the inconvenience".

[–] stinerman@feddit.online 25 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

The DMV might actually be sorry about it. The governor (who oversees the DMV) vetoed the bill, but the legislature overrode her veto. If it was up to the governor, this law would have never been in place.

They knew this would be a deeply unpopular bill, which is why they refused to open it up to public input...This sets a dangerous precedent for further discriminatory laws. All because the chucklefucks that run Kansas legislation in my home state are fucking bigots and wanted some brownie points from a dementia suffering pres and his vocal minority. Disgusting, I don't want my neighbors or Kansas citizens being fucked over like this, it pisses me off on a scale that has no number.

This is total horse shit, but not even a grace period? That's extra evil.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 20 points 3 weeks ago

Don't have a friend who can drive you to the DMV? Can't afford to pay for a ride? Don't live close to a bus stop? Please drive to the nearest DMV office where you will be arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a license that we invalidated just hours ago. Sorry for the inconvenience that we put a lot of effort into inflicting on you.

[–] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 72 points 3 weeks ago

First they came for the transgendered, and I didn't speak up because they didn't allot a public comment period.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 67 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It boils my fucking blood that my tax dollars are paying for this

The "your driver license is invalid immediately" is super fucking infuriating, especially in a country where without a driving license means being unemployable

Fucking scum, a driving license has nothing to do with sex. It is meant to prove that the cardholder is able to drive a vehicle or not.

Luckily I live in a continent where the cardholder sex isn't mentioned at all in the driving license (eu directive of 2006)

Your right to self identify doesn't exist under fascist rule. Identify as you're told, or face the consequences.

Today it's gender. I wonder what facet of identity they'll seek to control tomorrow. Sexual orientation? Religion? Political affiliation?

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 38 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Race.

Oh, you can’t change that? Well, the penalty’s pretty stiff, unfortunately…

And notice how they gave NO GRACE PERIOD for them whatsoever to cause as much pain and suffering. You can't drive, you can't buy alcohol, tobacco, etc. This goes to show what happens when hateful racists run the entire government and need a minority group to attack and blame everything on.

Remember to vote people, this is why voting is so important.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 48 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

They gave no grace period and invalidated licenses during elections.

What the fuck do the genitals I had at birth have to do with my ability to drive a car?

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.zip 29 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Republicans are obsessed with genitals. Maybe if we all send them a picture they can get it out of their system and finally grow up.

Whenever you see this line, anywhere, you know that they're saying "fuck you and what are you going to do about it, eh?"

I mean, we're 5 steps away from eugenics, and we'we sowwy for the inconvenience!

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The goal is literally to inspire acts of violence by trans people. You can only persecute a community so much before the more unstable elements in that community start lashing out violently against anyone they can blame. That's the goal here. They're actively trying to create trans mass shooters. You demonize and persecute a minority. When some return your violence, you use that to justify further persecution.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not trans, but I'm considering it. As someone posted above, respect my trans homies, or I'll identify as a fucking problem.

I am patient and intelligent. And very. Very. Fucking. Angry.

I cannot be alone.

This is so fucked up on so many levels. Next step will be trying to erase trans people from being able to go outside or have a job. I’m surprised Kansas lawmakers just didn’t go ahead and make all trans people sew a pink triangle to everything they wear.

why do we even need sex or gender marked on driver's licences?

[–] shane@feddit.nl 39 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I guess so that the police can know whether to say "stop resisting ma'am" or "stop resisting sir" when they pull the driver from the vehicle and start beating them?

I'm not trans and keen to understand how this impacts a trans person.

My. Immediate thought was it's intentionally leaving out the part that says you'll be issued with a replacement so won't stop you from driving so no biggie right?

However, that's diminishing the cruelty of it - it's about the emotional trauma from a government forcing you to officially identify as something you've fought your whole life not to be.

[–] spacesatan@leminal.space 47 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

More than that it's about forcing every trans person to be outed every time they show their id. If you're a trans person with passing privilege congrats now you have to think 'do I feel safe being openly trans here' every time you buy alcohol or nicotine.

[–] NotJohnSmith@feddit.uk 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh wow, that's a really good point that I'd missed. Thanks for helping me understand the full threat from this.

I wonder how many billions the USA has been wasted on crap legislation just like this.

I would think it would be worse for the license holder AND whatever law agency to be listed as "M" when they look "F", and tie up a lot of resources over nothing but another power trip.

So now you must hire a "medical professional" to exam and of course they will be paid by the state.

Then they'll need to make a new law enforcement division with a clever acronym, like T.E.D.

Then scanners at bathrooms with attending physician on call

Minimum wage is seven dollars an hour. Union membership is now mostly government employees and down to 10%.

STOCK MARKET 50K THOUGH

Is there any kind of charitable support fund to assist trans folk that want to get out of shit holes like Kansas? I guess it might be subject to abuse by the large number of cis folks that want to get out of Kansas too, but still.

Actually evil.

This exists for no reason other than to intentionally harm a small and already marginalized group.

It's a shame that fighting groups like the heritage foundation needed to take a couple decade backseat for insane cultural warring based entirely on misrepresenting each other and refusing to communicate.

And trying to point out that fact got you labeled as "enemy group" by everyone involved, and most people aren't involved enough to tell the difference between things like faux opposition within the establishment, and legitimate progressive groups with separate but legitimate grievances.

Get the peasants fighting the peasants, because if you pump enough noise into the environment, people just stop trying to comprehend outside of their bubble.

These monsters will destroy the world in order to apply their fickle bigotry.

Fuck the heritage foundation, bohemian grove, atlas network, and their myriad of other shapes used to obfuscate while affecting control. The rich have class solidarity, and they've done an amazing job getting everyone else to fight themselves.

Trans rights are human rights.

Better keep picking on less than 1% of the population instead of trying to solve the problems effecting everyone.
