For those who are, like me, confused about how the cat could belong to a man who died an entire human lifetime ago: the museum houses descendants of Hemingway's childhood cat (and a bunch of other cats too). The website has a page about them that includes pictures of a few https://www.hemingwayhome.com/our-cats

Fuck yes I love shit like this.

That dude has the ancestral memory of the coziest spot in the home.

This sent me down a rabbit hole where I learned PETA investigated the house. According to Wikipedia, even PETA said “What I found was a bunch of fat, happy and relaxed cats.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway_House

That article also has another picture of a cat lounging on priceless historical artifacts.

Their legal troubles with the USDA over these cats is an interesting read as well.

Do we know the polydactyl cats didn’t use their thumbs to do his writing?

You’re onto something:

If you haven’t been, it’s a great place to visit. The cats are everywhere, and they’re very friendly.

Id love to see it, but unfortunately its in Florida and i have no desire to go there

[–] jmill@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

Legally it is Florida, so I won't try to convince you otherwise. Culturally though, the Florida Keys are pretty distinct from the mainland. Nice place, except for all the usual high tourism island pitfalls, but they are alleviated considerably since there is a bridge.

I've been to the house. It's mostly open to the cats, and they say they're not allowed but every visitor says there was a cat asleep on the bed.

If you're wondering, yes, the house does smell like cat pee.

[–] Pirat@lemmy.org 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Didn't smell like cat pee when I visited and there were many cats. A couple were on that bed. Some were on shelves in the gift store. Basically, they're everywhere.

I have ~5 polydactyl community cats in my neighborhood, use to be 7. I've adopted one of them, and another that is bonded with it that isn't poly. My dad adopted one of the poly's as well. If anyone wants them we have free polydactyl cats out here.

Well, where are you?!

I'm in northern Minnesota and could likely talk my wife into adopting a homeless cat!

[–] Zetta@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

Haha I am sadly quite far from you. They are all well fed atleast

[–] mimic_kry@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I learned about this place through a phone call with a very nice Costco rep a little while ago lmao

Super cool picture! Wish I could visit with my cats

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

'hey bro, if you sign up for the executive membership, I'll tell you where to find some kitties'

'phasing through the telephone Y E S'

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That’s either a really short bed, or a really wide bed.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Maybe a way too many pillows just slightly off camera bed.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Probably short. The "tall" standard mattresses can't fit ~3% of the Western population on it lengthwise. Mattresses have a tendency to be really short.

Went there as a teenager. I loved the kitties and they tolerated my stinky human love and I got to let one rub against me!
