Until all outside spaces are owned by someone selling the next distraction like VR wank pods, just hanging around in public spaces not spending money is made a crime, then hanging around outside just becomes straight up dangerous due to pollution, weather swinging wildly between biting winds, freezing rain, and scorching heat.

discord was always kind of shit; we definitely didn't need another blackbox in communications back in 2015.

would love it if people moved away to something like stoat (can't wholeheartedly recommend element / matrix right now), unfortunately I don't see it happening at any large scale, and maybe that's not the end of the world.

many of us made a similar move away from reddit to lemmy and other activitypub-powered aggregators back in 2023. it's small and niche but pretty lovely? we generally have pleasant experiences here.

sort of apples to oranges but maybe the same can be true for people who want to move away from discord for ideological reasons.

Just to be clear, discord is just following through on regulations. It absolutely does not matter what platform you use, even if it’s decentralized, because if legislation keeps pushing for these controls it will affect any product out there. The only real option is completely private, self hosted services. No public access at all.

Which regulations required Discord to default users worldwide as teens and request government ID's to resort some of the basic functionality if there's contradicting or limited user data?

Discord has been aiming to have their IPO in Q1 2026 for a while now, which I have to assume you didn't know. Thinking all this is due to wide spread privacy invasive laws enacted by many countries across the globe and not Discord just attempting to associate verified and specific data to most of their end users is laughable!

You aren’t required to provide an ID, you can use “AI recognition” so your full argument immediately falls on its face.

19 states of the US have implemented social media identity verification laws and porn identity laws so yeah, it’s already happening in the US, it’s happening in Europe, Australia, it’s happening everywhere.

edit: for those just blindly downvoting and listening to the conspiracy theorist above. 30% of discord's user base is the USA. so yeah, if the USA is passing social media identity laws then they're just gonna implement the laws globally. It's easier on them, they don't have to verify who is in what country, they avoid vpn checks, they just let their 'identity partners' handle it, country be damned.

This is Occam's Razor. There's a dead simple explanation and the user above is trying to make up some crazy conspiracy theory that doesn't even make sense since you don't have to provide a fucking ID.

Falls on it's face lol! You mean a single T left uncrossed, whereas you've omitted relevant and quite well known info regarding Discord finally being on the cusp of their IPO after attempting it for more than 10 years.

Nonetheless, this "AI recognition" which somehow destroys my well laid out and supported comment requires an extensive behavior profile to even be an option for each user. Worse yet, it's proprietary software that's been shown on multiple occasions to be horrendous with accuracy. These accuracy issues may result in this AI company having your biometric data while also now being forced to upload an ID to get on the platform.

PS: The EU, Australia, and United States population's combined is 9.9% of the worlds population. But due to 38% of US states and 11% of EU countries with some ID law, plus Australia's first attempt to keep kids under 16 off social media, you still can somehow validate the global enforcement of laws put forward by the minority population from a group representing less than 10% of the planet?!

well yeah. The USA is 30% of discord's userbase, so of course they're going to add features that affect everyone if thirty % of their userbase now has ID laws.
