Does Fedecan host a Matrix server? (lemmy.ca)

Hey folks, given the shit show with Discord, another community I'm part of on Discord is wondering whether to move to Matrix. Was wondering if there's an unadvertised Matrix server that someone at Fedecan is already hosting?

After some research and discussion, we don't have any immediate plans to set up a Matrix instance by Fedecan. Our main concern is that we don't have the capacity to moderate private chats / channels. If we were to set up the instance for public use only, it might not be useful enough to justify the resource usage and admin time to keep it going.

We are open to revisiting this again in the future. If anyone has more thoughts on why we should / shouldn't set up an instance, feel free to let us know, and we will copy them into our notes for the next time we look into this. :)

Matrix does seem like it would require its own dedicated mod team, but iirc there is an automod to help with the really obvious violations.

I hate to say it but the best way to convince the team to create a Discord alt is to donate and speak up that people here want a Canadian Discord alternative

I'm not paid to say this btw, I'm a volunteer admin and my fellow admin teammates don't know about this comment I've just written

Been contributing monthly since I joimed in 2023. It's approaching my cell phone bill. Not complaining, just saying I got that part covered. 😄

Still, I can't demand extra free labour but in case it was already done.. or someone was about to do it.. 🤭

Ever since I joined lemmy.ca, I tried to find a Canadian matrix server. Lots of Mastodon servers but could not find a matrix one.

We currently aren't running any Matrix servers

There is a Matrix chat for sh.itjust.works, but that's a bit different: https://matrix.to/#/#sh.itjust.works:matrix.org
