What's a good instance to recommend for EU? We all need to stop saying piefed.social lol

Could somebody explain to me how Piefed the software/protocol relates to Lemmy the software/protocol?

I have no idea, but I mean things like Mastodon and Lemmy not being 100% compatibel etc.

We do see a lot of piefed.social (and other instances I guess) posts. Do they "work" on Lemmy exactly as they do on PieFed and vice versa?

The two interoperate perfectly. There are some Piefed only features - ~blaze_eu@piefed.social appears as a link to a multi-community (feed) on our end, but I don't think that's supported by Lemmy yet. The developers communicate so I think the plan is to eventually get that working in Lemmy as well.

I also reacted to your post with a smiley face, but on your end you'll just see it as an upvote. There are some more technical issues, such as (if I remember correctly) Piefed supporting the moving of discussion between communities but Lemmy not yet having implemented support for it. Some Piefed communities support making posts in the Q&A format where OP can highlight the best answer, which will just render as a normal discussion with no highlighted answer in Lemmy. But stuff like that is really the extent to the incompatibility. There's nothing that is really felt by users of either platform.

Thanks for taking the time!

It really does sound like piefed is the better reddit-like fediverse experience.

I recently found out that archive services are hardcoded in a really weird way on Lemmy, which makes me a little skeptical.

Yeah PieFed and Lemmy interoperate really well. You can check out their communities like !movies@piefed.social

Just think of piefed as another flavor of lemmy with a couple of extra features (different tech that interops with everything). The interface just looks a tiny bit different, but we post all the time on each others communities. To the end user, its all about the same.

For power users, the ability to schedule posts, admin tools, and interop with other fedi services are a game changer. And events just started to become a thing too. Self hosting is really easy.

It really doesnt matter where/how people end up (lemmy/piefed/etc..etc...) as long as they have a good time and stay.
