I knocked the power point and my iphone didn’t charge overnight, so now it’s completely flat and dead.

But my Series 8 watch (no cellular, GPS only) is still receiving and sending SMS (not iMessage) messages.

I’m very surprised and curious if anyone can explain how is this possible?

Yea the watch has wifi. But don’t sms messages come through the phone network? I just thought it was odd.

Not necessarily. Many plans and devices offer "WiFi calling" or "SMS over WiFi" to enable those services to use WiFi when available to reduce mobile data usage. Either see if has a way to disable that or just disable WiFi on your watch altogether and see what it does.

When your phone is off it’s still running basic functions under power in the background.

Perhaps the answer is in that feature somewhere? I wouldn’t suspect anything ominous.
