She texted "what's up dog"?

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago

"Not much, what's up with you?"

It doesn't hit the same when it is missing the stank.

I wish I could text my cat

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 52 points 3 days ago (5 children)

If cats could text you back
They would not

I think i read that somewhere.

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Mine would, to complain that they're hungry, two hours before their feeding time.

Spoken like a dog lover who doesn’t get cats. Many… dare I say even most cats would. Not constantly, not in an obsessively needy way, but they do love you and want to be around you and want to know where you are. They do actually care.

Exactly. Cats are extremely affectionate. If we’re away from our cat in another room for a long period, he’ll carry his toy mouse while yowling. Once he finds us, he drops it near us and we’ll get head bumps and tail hugs.

The cats that don’t seem to be affectionate could be for owners that don’t really know how to interact with them properly. Or the ones that just let them roam around, don’t engage them or try enrichment, etc.

Dogs are loving and affectionate by default but cats just need a bit of love and affection back to get there.

Either no reply or any of these: -_- ಠ_ಠ 🥱 🙄 😈

When you call a dog, they come running all excited to know why one of their favorite humans wanted their attention.

When you call a cat, you get a voicemail recorded yawn that translates to: "Please leave a message, and I will get back to you sometime on Tuesday after my second nap, maybe, if you forgot to fill my food bowl. Fucking dumbass deaf horrible hunting Thumb!"

Edit: Yes, I am implying that cats have racial slurs for every species including their ~~owners~~ slaves, and are little psychopathic assholes about it.

Anybody know of a good self-hosting video system I could install to keep tabs on my pets?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

C/selfhosted or selfhosting, would be the place to actually get an answer. Maybe c/linuxmemes or c/programmerhumor.

If you don't want DVR, some cheap esp32 cams and home assistant

[–] zerodawn@leaf.dance 2 points 3 days ago

I believe the go to recommendation now days is a reolink camara and frigate as your nvr os. My understanding is both can operate fully locally when blocked from accessing the internet at the firewall level.

Raspberry pi and a webcam

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Two way pet cams are a thing. You may not be able to text, but you can still stalk and get a bit of long distance affection.

Warning: Do not try this with cats.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What's going on with cats?

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

If you tried to video call your cat I suspect one of two things would happen.

Either it's entirely ignored or the cat would knock the camera/tablet off of the table.
