Why would you ever want to debark your dog? Holy shit what the fuck man. Rare Doug Ford W.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The same Doug Ford that brought back penned hunting for dogs? That Doug Ford can fuck off.

[–] HotDog7@feddit.online 3 points 8 hours ago

Doug Ford's the type of guy who takes one step forward, and two steps back.

Its popular in some Asian countries also, where they want the dog to look good but not be loud.

Our dog was a rescue from Korea and first 2-3 months she never made a single noise, so we were worried she'd had it done ( per vets info on debarking in Asia).

Thankfully she was just unsure of her new home and now barks at me when its time to go outside, or when she's hungry. But we've been training her to come "talk" to us first, before resorting to barking. And its working.

Alberta banned declawing cats before Ontario did.

I didn't expect that

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 11 points 1 day ago

What the hell, I thought this was already banned

I know declawing is brutally mutilating cats' toes in order to cause them chronic pain and mobility issues for the cruel enjoyment of the sadistic bastards who do it, but can someone please explain to me what in the name of fuck is “debarking”..‽

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Mutilating dog throats so they can't make barking noises.

I want to downvote you, just because that is so effing nasty that i cant imagine upvoting it...

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can they even eat and drink properly after that?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 11 hours ago

Yes, but they have a very sad, raspy sound for a bark. I've read that it can cause anxiety in the dog (you don't say, right?).

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 1 day ago

No idea, I am only aware of what it is and how it is done. Haven't met a dog who had their bark removed.

The photo in the article looks like 2026's update to the overly attached girlfriend meme

Edit: overly attached veterinarian. I'll get there lol

Debarking dogs? WTF? Is it what I think it is?

Cats can hurt babies or anyone with their claws, destroy furniture, etc. While I'm against it, I can understand the reasoning why people do that.

Why would you take away your dog's voice? Just fucking train your dog. It's not a cat, it was bred to be trained and obey.

[–] Senal@programming.dev 19 points 1 day ago

if you are worried about those things to the point where cutting off the toes of pets for convenience is a consideration , you should not get the pet (or re-home it if you already have it).

Incidentally cats can be trained, it's not the same as dog training but it does exist in some forms.

[–] MrQuallzin@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

There's never a valid reason to declaw a cat. It's removing the last joint of each toe and is animal cruelty.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The problem is vets don't explain it to owners, because they just want the $.

[–] MrQuallzin@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

You've got shit vets then

Keeping a pig in a cage so small she cannot even roll over is animal cruelty.

Raping a cow every year of her life and stealing her child from her while she bellows and cries actual tears is animal cruelty.

Keeping billions of chickens in darkness, choking on ammonia fumes, bred such that they cannot even support their own weight without injury is animal cruelty.

You are surrounded by a tsunami of animal cruelty. The abuses we visit upon our pets for our convenience and enjoyment does not even move the needle.

All the animals we create are entitled to the exact same unconditional love and protection as our own children. The experiences of animals are real and matter. Their suffering is identical in nature to your own. It harms us when we take pleasure in cruelty and violence. Go vegan.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 hours ago

It harms us when we take pleasure in cruelty and violence.

most people don't do that.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

cries actual tears

There's no good evidence of any other animal aside from us actually crying with tears. Can animals tear up a little during heightened emotions? Sure. And yeah, I understand some animals do have emotions, they're just not exactly the same as us. Doesn't mean they're worthless.

So I'm not saying the cows aren't distressed, but they aren't crying tears like sobbing children.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago

Raping a cow every year of her life

no one does that

a claim made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
