Funfact, the US over seas military base budget is separate from the DoD budget. So every time we get excited about that almost trillion dollar budget, that's not even all of it.

I highly recommend the book Base Nation.

Kick them out

With Trump in charge, that feels more and more like an occupying force, rather than some stabilizing presence, or whatever the bullshit is.

Yeah it's time to cancel all these bases and kick them out. The US can't be considered an ally anymore if it threatens Greenland. Especially the base in Greenland...

Sure would be a shame if we had a bunch of Benghazis right now...

Not joking. Sweden entering NATO also signed an agreement, not necessary for NATO membership, allowing for US service personel to not be under Swedish law while in Sweden. So they will probably be able to commit any crime and just go home and get a slap on the wrist. A US NATO base is expected to be up and running in Sweden in 2027.

Never was a "stabilizing presence" stop kidding yourself.

Interesting, although the Japanese one was originally justified in that they weren't allowed to have a military after WW2 and the US wasn't quite as threatening so the bases were a pretty good deterrent to invasion.

Even more interesting is they're looking to build up their military, even prior to Trump 2.0 (and there's been an effort for a while). It's weirdly good timing, although I'm married to an Okinawan and can say a majority of them haven't wanted bases for decades because of the rape and abuse soldiers cause.

So Djibouti must be 80% military bases then?

These are big military bases, there are thousand more military facilities all around (more than 100 just in italy).
