this seems dumb to me. spend dumptrucks full of money on AI, when they could have just included a 'skip this part' button that does the same thing?

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 44 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why would they make an easy solution to a problem they've created when they could sell you a convoluted one that makes use of everyone's favourite buzz word?

[–] U7826391786239@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

lol "look at us! we're using ai toooooo!!!"

get fucked, sony

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Couldn't agree more.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Old games just had cheat codes

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 33 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I love patent illustrations.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 16 points 1 week ago

That’s clearly two separate paths

A) Get Me Off B) Get Me Your Fucking Mail ing List

[–] bigchungus@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Needs more piss filter, distortions and random nonsense. Then it will truly be AI!

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm 100% certain I've seen this in a game ages ago, but without the dumb AI part.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Titanfall 2 definitely had the ghost thing.

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I feel like that was a thing in one of the mario games?

Hmm, possible. Paper?

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder if the much more sensible strategy of just making the ghost a recording of a person beating it, instead of shoehorning in AI, would infringe on this patent.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thankfully that's unlikely due to such an approach having a completely different implementation.

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And also due to it being something no one fucking wants.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No one wants a ghost recording? Due to the common use of it in racing games since forever and the implementation of a similar mechanic in FromSoftware games being so well received.

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Visual similarities ≠ identical mechanic.

FS's is a way for human players to interact in each others games. And racing ghosts are just asynchronous multiplayer.

This is literal hand-holding so the player doesn't have to bother actually playing the game.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Right. I'm going to have to suggest you re-read my comment and the context. What I was saying was that a ghost function that isn't AI-powered wouldn't be susceptible to legal action under this patent. I also have no doubt Sony will force this in anyway. All of the big companies have gone gaga for AI. I have absolutely no idea why other than very poorly made projections, but the reality is they insist on using the biggest crowbar they can find.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago

Isn't this a Nintendo thing from like the 2000s? Why would you even need to use AI when you could just use a recording of one of your testers doing it or (crazy thought) just using a "skip this" button? This seems like a dumb way to shoe-horn AI into something that doesn't make sense.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I feel like they do not understand why people play games.

Also this thing is gonna get exploited for a cheat bot tout suite

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I usually KNOW how to get past an obstacle..... sausage fingers are my issue, not inability to follow instructions or basic deduction skills.

I've got a fiver on it being hacked to cheat in competitive games.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Player: "Uh, hey... wouldn't beating this section be easier if you didn't jump directly into the lava pit?"

AI Ghost: "LOL, you're right!! 😂😅🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ I'll try to incorporate your feed back into future attempts to complete this section!"

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

"I'm sorry, I've failed you. I'm trash." <Corrupts your saves, for every game, including cloud saves. Bricks your system>

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

The "claim" is that it would be trained on gameplay footage, so like .. is it just going to do what a bunch of players do?

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago

So ... they patented NPCs?

[–] kerthale@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Why even play the game then!?

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago
[–] nesc@lemmy.cafe 9 points 1 week ago

How can they patent it? I've seen something very similar more than 20 years ago. AI is a keyword here? Like you can patent everything as long as it's AI?

[–] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

If I need help I will look up a video or a guide. I dont need a fucking AI.

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Good, now nobody else can implement this idiotic system and I will continue to just not buy Sony games.

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Let me guess, you have to pay a monthly subscription fee for this and if you want the free tier, it would just require you to play all games with an internet connection to ensure you aren't doing something you shouldn't and collecting your juicy data in the meantime. This fucking timeline is almost like the fallout timeline

[–] PurpleFanatic@quokk.au 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

why not just have an AI play the whole game for you? sounds great /s

[–] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Lookout twitch streamers AI is going to take your job too!

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 week ago

I don't think this will be a joke for long.

[–] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 6 points 1 week ago

Didn't they have 'drivatars' in that racing game years ago at this point? An AI imitation of a player should not be patentable.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yet another reason to avoid Sony.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Well that’s much easier than just designing a good game

God forbid someone having to actually figure something out on their own…that’s practically abuse

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Uggghhh. Sony was already the worst with the annoying fucking nagging if the player takes a micro-second to look at anything that isn't a button to the next level/mission/etc. "I think this panel is part of a puzzle!" "Yeah, I fucking know that already. I'm just taking a second to look at the other 99% of the game you assholes spent years designing. Shut up!"

[–] gens@programming.dev 1 points 1 week ago (5 children)

You can't patent game mechanics, afaik

[–] omarfw@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Warner brothers patented the nemesis system from shadow of mordor

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago

WB patented the nemesis system

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

You can patent pretty much anything in a lot of countries because the patent office officials don't pay any attention. Probably it'd get thrown out in court, but that doesn't really matter to a patent troll who will be able to make loads of money from settlements that never go to court because settling is cheaper.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

People patented how to get jpegs of your camera to your PC by file transfer. Trolls in my opinion.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

Nintendo says otherwise.

[–] Agent_Karyo@piefed.world 0 points 1 week ago

I wonder if in the future this sort of functionality would become common place.

I could actually see this being useful in some complex strategy / business sims for querying more convoluted or unintuitive gameplay mechanic. But it would have been done well, more of a dynamic Wiki query tool powered by a local LLM than Sony's approach.
