Emulation

Discussion and News forum for all things video game emulation related, or tangentially. Platform agnostic. Mobile is welcome too. We'll keep it loose, but more focused on emulation. Piracy discussion is allowed, that's one reason we're on this domain.

A General Discussion will be stickied for the community to chat in about whatever. Staying on topic isn't important in any GD stickies.

Rules

#1: Obey our domain rules first and foremost.

#2: Mundane Tech Support/Game Sourcing Questions need to be kept to the stickied posts, unless it's something novel/interesting others might want to see.

#3: Unless it's at least tangentially relevant to emulation, no politics. Don't get your toque in a knot.

#4: Be nice, and consider reporting an offending hoser of #4 instead of responding to mean people to begin with.

Inspired by negative impressions of /r/ROMS:

#5a: Strive to be polite & patient with noobs asking questions.

#5b: Doesn't mean be a doormat.

BetterVR is a flatscreen-to-VR conversion mod for The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that's releasing 2 days after the release of this video. It'll be a freely available and will have be open-source.

For more info and the release countdown, go to:
https://crementif.github.io/BotW-BetterVR

Features:

  • Fully stereo-rendered with 6DOF. No alternated eye rendering is used.
  • Full hands and arms support. You can drip yourself out in all the fanciest clothes.
  • Wield weapons, torches and bokoblin arms into combat.
  • Gestures to equip and throw weapons.
  • Use motion controls to interact with the world to solve puzzles or start fires.
  • Optional third-person mode.
  • Large mod compatibility. BetterVR only modifies the code and no game data. Most other mods should be compatible.

This mod requires using Cemu to emulate the Wii U version of Breath Of The Wild on your PC. It requires a legal copy of the game. No game files are supplied by this mod.

MOTIVATION:
5 years ago during Covid-19 I started this project because I really wanted to chop down trees in VR. And from there it just grew way bigger and way better then I thought was feasible...

STATE OF THE MOD:
While I put a lot of effort into this mod, not everything works. Expect some jank that'll be resolved over time.

AMD graphic cards might not be supported (at launch at least). During testing we could not get it to work on an AMD system due to a driver bug.

PERFORMANCE:
Performance will not be as good as a native VR title due to CPU-heavy emulation. During testing, frame interpolation made it very playable on the systems listed below, that were also used for recording this trailer:

  • i9-13900K, RTX 4090, 32 GB RAM, Pimax Crystal Super
  • Ryzen 7600x, RTX 3060 12GB, 32GB RAM, Meta Quest 3

CREDITS:

  • Crementif: Main Developer
  • Holydh: Developed some of the new input systems
  • Exzap: Technical support and optimization help
  • Mako Marci: Edited the trailer
  • Tim, Mako Marci, Solarwolf07 & Elliott Tate: Helped with testing, recording, feedback and support
