I created the shavian community yesterday to allow users to practice writing with the Shavian alphabet. This means that content is written in English with a non-Latin alphabet.

Even though I haven't told anyone about the community yet, there has been some traffic: I think my posts so far are being served in a feed somewhere. This is not desirable: a general user would not want to see post titles with unrecognisable characters in their feed.

Is there a way to hide a community from feeds? I found this post about hiding a community, but I don't know if this is possible on lemmy.world.

This will be a feature in Lemmy 1.0

  • Private communities: Only followers can view the content, and need to be approved manually by mods. Other community visibilities are also available (unlisted, local only).

Hello,

we can mark your community as locally hidden, which will prevent non-subscribed users from seeing it. This is however only a local thing and will not affect users on other instances. It will therefore also prevent discovery, as it's not only removing posts from a feed, but also removing the entire community from being seen anywhere unless accessed directly.

Thank you for the explanation. With those conditions, I think I'll leave it as is for now. I noticed when looking at my feed after posting this that a few posts in other languages (presumably labelled "uncategorized") are appearing in my feed, so at least posts from my community won't be a complete exception.
As the other commenter pointed out, I can also take a look at the "unlisted" option when Lemmy hits 1.0.

Thanks again!
