I'm quite often in low / no signal places so my iPhone is setup to have a lot of offline apps. I periodically have issues where my iPhone "helps" me by freeing up space. Unfortunately, a trigger can be downloading an offline map / wiki just before going somewhere without much coverage. I just turned off "offload unused apps" (and I'm not sure why it was on).

I'm wondering what other settings are lurking that are worth turning off. Any ideas?

(And there are probably better places to ask on the internet but I'm working to use a few less of the centralised sites or US tech.)

Also, I'm kind of pissed how silent this is. A notification saying they are about to do this seems like the lowest bar for respecting the user. And informing the user that it will be done "soon" if they don't take action seems kind of minimal for assuming the owner has some sort of intelligence and agency

Settings > Apps > App Store > (scroll to bottom) Offload Unused Apps

Yeah, I got that one but it's a good addition to Lemmy to have written down.

I'm wondering if there is anything else that the iPhone will do to automatically free hard drive space. I think there seems to be an automatic cleanup of photos? That's far less frustrating but it's still something I wouldn't mind making manual

I'm guessing there could be more that I'd eventually find and I'd rather update all the settings at once

It wants to offload your Photos library, too. But I think you have to enable that one. It’s not the default.

I just wish they would let you mark certain apps for never offloading.

I like that it offloads that game I haven’t played in a month or that calorie counter I tried and didn’t like. But, there are some that sit unused for long periods until I absolutely do need them.

Yeah agreed. One of the things missing as I got off the plane was the ride hailing app that works in this country. I obviously had data then but not really app reinstall data
