Community rules:

Be respectful and civil with each other. Don't be a jerk. There is a real human being on the other side of your screen. See also the Blahaj.Zone Community Rules

No bigotry of any kind allowed. Making racist, sexist, trans-/homo-/queerphobic, otherwise demeaning and hateful comments is not ok. Disabilities and mental illnesses are not to be used as insults and should not be part of your comment unless speaking of your own or absolutely relevant.

No gatekeeping and being rude to people who don't agree with you. Leave “gamer” stereotypes out of your comment (e.g. sexless, neck bearded, teenaged, basement-dwelling, etc). Don't compare people to animals, or otherwise deny their humanity. Even if you think someone is the worst human on the planet, do not wish death or harm upon them.

No "justice porn". Posts regarding legal action and similar is allowed, but celebrating someone being harmed is not.

Contrarianism for its own sake is unnecessary and not welcome.

No planning operations, no brigading, no doxxing or similar activities allowed.

Absolutely no defense of GamerGate and other right-wing harassment campaigns, no TERFs and transphobia, racism, dismissing of war crimes and praise of fascists. This includes “JAQing off”, intentionally asking leading questions while pretending to be a neutral party. This also applies to other forms of authoritarianism and authoritarian or criminal actions by liberal or leftist governments.

NSFW threads, such as ones discussing erotic art, pornography and sex work, must be tagged as such.

I decided to do some research on such online harassment campaigns. What I noticed that there are multiple online harassment campaigns that, similarly to Gamergate:

  • start on some levels of misinformation, usually by twisting the words or actions of the target,
  • the harassers control the narrative online by attacking anyone daring to oppose it in any way of form, by further harassment,
  • the harassers not satisfied until the main target (and often the newer targets) are ran off the internet, or some other demands are met.

I know that 4chan had a few rounds with harassment campaigns of the past, and I also have some suspicion that some 4chan users really wanted to chase the Project Chanology fame, but failing miserably. I did notice that some people have a weirdly specific brand of "mental health activism", that seems like it was made around the fact that the Church of Scientology was strongly anti-psychiatry, with some of those people even being leftists. I however do not remember too much of it, save for that they allegedly caused some teen girls commit suicide.

Three big harassment campaigns that pre-date GamerGate were...

  • The harassment of Kathy Sierra by the neo-nazi Andrew "weev" Auerheimer and his followers
  • The backlash against "Mass Effect 3" and - particularly - how people like Casey Hudson, Jessica Chobot and Jennifer Hepler were singled out for personal harassment
  • The harassment of Anita Sarkeesian after the launch of the Kickstarter for "Tropes against Women in Video Games"

None of these events incorporated all of the elements that would lateron form the core of GamerGate, but they can be seen as test runs, particularly insofar as many of the same actors (such as Auerheimer) were involved, as the core of the attacks were often misogynist and queerphobic, and because much of the harassment was conducted in the same way, weaponizing social media in order to single out individuals which were blamed for a whole slew of (often non-existing) problems/faults/...

Anything in kiwifarms, soyjack.party, & wizardchan. 2ch still has made more, especially since the majority users are pedophiles.
