Move marks president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and support for cleaner-running vehicles

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is repealing the Biden-era federal fuel economy standards, significantly weakening fuel efficiency requirements for tens of millions of new gasoline-powered cars and light trucks.

It marks the US president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and federal support for cleaner-running vehicles and renewable energy. Burning gasoline is a significant contributor to global heating and transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

“We are officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome, horrible actually, Cafe standards that imposed expensive restrictions,” Trump said in an Oval Office announcement, flanked by top auto executives including the CEOs of Ford and Stellantis. “It put tremendous upward pressure on car prices, combined with the insane electric vehicle mandate.”

Yeah, but car makers will still adhere to the intentional standard, since the intentional market is what they can profit from the most

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Depends. I don't think we are exporting a whole lot of SUVs and pickups...especially big body-on-frame SUVs.

CAFE standards already killed the small/midsize car market. Automakers have all their chips in the SUV/CUV segment, because they are in the same category as giant trucks, and thus they improve the average fuel economy.

That, combined with the fact that Trump doesn't do anything for the heck of it. Somebody is gaining (or at least planning to gain) from this (besides him)...makes me think that this will have significant negative impacts for the environment.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago

I'm not sure there are many body on frame SUVs left.

And the "same category as trucks" has more to do with safety standards. Fuel economy has to do with wheelbase; the way the math works out, it's easier to build a less fuel efficient massive vehicle than a more fuel efficient small one.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

This is for the average across the fleet.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Unfortunately, the EU is about to partly cave on that* for lesser tariffs. I can't believe this is happening.

* at least security in SUVs; not sure about emissions. Hopefully not, but the agreement does not specify.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

National standards might change, but I’m betting California and some other states will still hold car manufacturers to a higher standard.

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Reasonable, but this shit still fucking pisses me off

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Just tax fuel more and let math do the work. Europeans are shifting to EVs because environment? It's because gasoline is $7.50 a gallon and they can do math.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuel efficiency—the measurement for getting more mileage out of the same amount of gasoline. Congratulations, MAGA voters, you played yourself! When you pick up that new pile of trash made by Ford or Stellantis (and I know you will because they're AMERICAN* cars), I hope you enjoy the higher gas expenses that you voted for.

* With the extra irony being that many of those "American" brands are owned by Stellantis, which isn't even headquartered anywhere in North America.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They already played themselves by picking the 'American' vehicles. They are all trash and hard to work on.

The Japanese ones are really the only ones built for longevity and ease of maintenance.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Shame SAAB went away. No one beat them on longevity. Volvo comes close, but even they don't have hundreds of cars with 2,000,000 miles on the odometer. SAAB hasn't made a car since 2011 and keeps adding cars to the list.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

My buddy has a Volvo and had to spend $200 to replace one of his headlight hubs because it got rainwater in it.

They made it to where you have to hook it up to a Volvo computer because it needs proprietary software to set up with the rest of the car. None of the local mechanics would even touch it and all told us the same reason why.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So the plan is to sell inbred rednecks thirstier trucks, while gasoline demand is decreasing and will become a niche product in a decade.

Enjoy your $300 fillups boys.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And after buying inefficient vehicles, they'll complain loudly about the price of fuel

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Oh I can't wait for the next non-Repulican president so they can print more dumbass stickers saying "I did that" when the price goes up.

"I want to destroy the world quicker because think of all the shareholder value we can create along the way"

Its really fucked up man. I'm not a communist at all but I start to understand why people would want to go the complete opposite way of this system.

Its basically "I don't give a fuck how many people die or even if we destroy the entire world in the process I just want to generate more money for the people at the 'top'" and its really sad.

There's absolutely no reason to do this, other than generate more money at the expense of the citizens and the entire planet.

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Great, another way to give oil companies more money and still ignoring the cost of living crisis we are all struggling to deal with.

Another GOP idea that will hurt us way more than it will help.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Another GOP idea that will hurt us way more than it will help.

It'll help. It'll even be pleasant for the rich donors. The filthy plebiscite deserves to eat the shit it wallows in because the rich have all the money.

-The corrupt politicians fucking us over.

[–] UncleMagpie@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Why the fuck is the president rolling back or setting any regulation? That’s what congress is for. Also, for example, they are supposedly handling tariffs and upholding the constitution. Their duties include impeaching and removing from office presidents that violate their oaths and the constitution.

Yes I know we’re in this mess due to the combo of an evil fascist president and a weak corrupt congress. And decades of congress allowing presidential power to escalate.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm sure this won't be good but CAFE standards were garbage and resulted in all the giant trucks we see to day so fuck em.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

The problem is they’re not repealing the truck exceptions, they’re repealing the increased efficiency

[–] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

Trumps got to keep those angry older white guys driving lifted blacked out trucks with a sticker of a little kid peeing on something happy.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Anyone remember how EVs were totally going to take over by 2030?

[–] Killer57@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

They still are, everywhere that isn't the US or parts of Canada

[–] HerrBeter@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

This wasn't very popular in the fossil fuel industry, they've done everything in their power to stop BEV and electricity

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

Just another horrible thing in a long line of horrible things both Trump admins have done. Wrt climate action, leaving the Paris Agreement was the big one. After that, this - perversely - feels like par for the course.

Cafe standards

Not familiar with that turn of phrase ... oh, it's another acronym: CAFE
