Wild beavers never went extinct. If they had been extirpated in the 1600s there would not have been any left 400 years later as large scale beaver farming wasn't viable.
Beavers are cool enough as they are, no need to fluff up their story.

I was seriously confused by the comic too, but it seems to be referencing a specific reintroduction of beavers in Scotland.
Beavers are quite plentiful in North America.

It's not the beavers job to protect wetlands.
It's our job not to destroy them.
Funny story, killing Beavers destroys wetlands, and bringing them back(without killing them again) accomplishes a lot of things quickly on its own. Don't write-off "please survive at least so long as we aren't actually killing you" as an obligation of wildlife.
