I've found that a lot of the people who complain the loudest about the costs of AI also seem to refuse to believe that local AIs are even possible. Quite frustrating.

I honestly think a big part of it is the tendency to believe that the big tech companies aren't just extremely wasteful - basically thinking that if it could be provided cheaply for 99% of the benefit, the tech companies would be doing it themselves.
I really like the idea of people running their own LLMs. The cost is at the point of use, and it's only giving responses that are explicitly asked for.
So what open models should casual users be looking at getting into, then? Which ones are the best and the most ethical, and what kind of stuff is available for free?

That's what the post title should be. And it should give users a one-click cross-platform setup to do it including iOS and Android. And the result should actually be comparable.
Like, I am not fucking with you. If OP really believes in what they're posting, this is the messaging required here and everywhere else to make good on the goal.
End users care about cost, convenience, and quality. Deliver all three, and wrap your messaging around it.
If actually delivering this is not possible, then there's your answer to why end users pick remote third party paid solutions, and OP should delete this post.
