What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in unrelated arguments.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting or manipulating the post in any way, this includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be permanently banned.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

As a Canadian teacher, I've met so many Ukrainian refugee families and seen the result of the trauma caused by the Russian invasion first hand. Knowing that these fascist loving tankies are out here spreading such abhorrent lies and propaganda fills me with an overwhelming sense of hatred on behalf of the children that I watch struggle every day to find some feeling of safety, and believe that this is now their home.

I will take a dig at these malicious fucks every single time I see them attempt to pulls their lies from the dredges of .ml and plaster them on any community that isn't in their sphere of influence. And I take great pleasure in watching Yog and his Ilk writhe every time they realize they can't just rule 1 me to make the truth stop flowing.

You think kids in Canada have it bad? AHAHAHAHAHAHAH

You should try talking to the kids being drafted to the frontline, idiot

Your country made a 6 billion donation to its weapons industry through this war, talk about conflict of interest

[–] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

In fairness, it has negative thirty votes, and the top comments are all people shitting on the OP.

On the other hand, there's this which can fuck all the way off. I also like Yogthos's assumption that people in Ukraine don't realize that the West doesn't care about them dying all that much, like it's escaped their notice so far, and they'll be big mad once they finally figure it out for the first time, because just like him they're just kind of bebopping around saying stuff, not really thinking about or aware of these issues.

Read writing from people in Ukraine. They're well aware.

We aren't fucking fighting for the sake of the West. We're fighting because the moment we stop, we will be eradicated. Not like this is the first attempt by the russian empire (name on the label may change)

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 40 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (3 children)

So like does the user not think Russia is imperialistic? Why talk shit about the US Empire but eat up Russian Empire shit? Obligatory anarchist "states bad"

[–] jingoistards_gtfo@sh.itjust.works -3 points 40 minutes ago

The russian regime have been in place since the US coup'ed them.

Remember the 90ies when the whole eastern block were starving? Putin is an american bitch, not the opposite, idiot.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

The ML definition of "imperialism" is "an advanced form of capitalism". It conviently excludes anything Russia has ever done. It also excludes the British East India Company, but they don't think about that.

[–] jingoistards_gtfo@sh.itjust.works -3 points 40 minutes ago

Just making shit up huh?

[–] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 22 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I think if a definition of imperialism excludes the EAST INDIA COMPANY, something is fucked up

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 4 points 8 hours ago

I mean, the East India Company was literally a company. It was capitalist as fuck.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Some seem to not be able to hold the idea that two things can be wrong at the same time. Others see Russia or China as lesser evils. Obviously those have their own "Monroe Doctrine" but nevertheless. Not my opinion, just elaborating on the why from my interactions in .ml.

Absolute bass ackwards dipshits.

[–] cm0002@infosec.pub 10 points 11 hours ago

Oop, well that snake would have bit me LMAO

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I wanted to correct them but I couldn't think of a way to put it nicely... I guess that didn't matter 🤣

"You silly Goofy Goober, that was intentional!"

[–] pixelmeow@lemmy.world 17 points 14 hours ago

I’ve been hearing that phrase my entire life :)

Imagine being so shielded from reality, that you still believe that "Nazi" garbage?

[–] Tuuktuuk@piefed.ee 20 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Well, it has a kernel of truth.

But yeah, the nazis were funded by Kremlin. Because of losing their main source of income in most of Ukraine, after 2014 the prevalence of far-right extremist attacks has decreased everywhere in the rest of Ukraine, but risen in Crimea and the occupied Donbas. In 2014 Ukraine's armed forces were a joke, because they figured nobody will ever attack Ukraine and even if someone does, the Russia will come for help. Therefore, the main function of their armed forces was to be free workforce for the highest officers. Almost no useful training in use of weapons took place. The only people who really understood something about fighting were the Russia-funded nazis. And, being nationalists, they then refused to allow the Russia to take over Ukraine in 2014. After that, Ukraine began a sllloooowww process of dismantling the nazi organizations, which was extremely dangerous, because those organizations were stronger than Ukraine's armed forces and were dreaming of taking over Kyiv. But, by around 2018 all of those units had been integrated into Ukraine's armed forces and watered down so that new recruits could join them without having to encounter nazism.

Ukraine has done an extremely good job neutering the nazi organizations implanted there by the Russia. It's beem a huge error by the western press that this process was not written about between 2014 and 2022. There were articles about it – at least in Finland – around year 2005 when Putin originally started funding nazis in countries tied to the Russia, but after that... Nothing.
It's true that the Russia was stopped by its own nazis in 2014, but it's untrue that those nazis were connected to Ukraine's government.

[–] Mika@piefed.ca 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Eh they weren't stronger than armed forces. They are by far less numerous. It was mostly about the pulbic image - they were the patriots who were among the first to be on the frontlines in the hardest of times, after all. Regardless of ideology, that should be treated with respect.

[–] jingoistards_gtfo@sh.itjust.works 0 points 39 minutes ago* (last edited 38 minutes ago)

"They are not nazis"

"In fact they're a little nazis"

"Whatever, we should threat nazis with respect"

Warmongerers will never cease to amaze me with their unapologetic bad-faith

Go die in kiev, idiot

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 1 points 8 hours ago

Russia, in fact, has way longer history of bigotry. Way before neo nazism it was cool to stomp any minority into the ground

[–] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 27 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Russia sounds a lot like the Nazis in 1939 to me. You know "freeing" the Czech people

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 8 points 8 hours ago

Or like the ones sending tanks to Hungary... oh wait

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 23 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Absolutely. Whether or not Ukraine was showing "proper" respect for ethnicly Russian Ukrainians. Putin's response was wrong. If he was concerned for them he would have offered to resettle them in Russia. Truth is Putin cares so much for them, he'd put a bullet in each one of their brains personally. It was always about the land and warm water ports in Crimea and the donbas.

[–] jingoistards_gtfo@sh.itjust.works -1 points 38 minutes ago

"If you're so concerned about gaza just take an arab in your bedroom".

Retard

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 17 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

As a Hungarian with relatives near Uzhhorod and Mukachevo, I can tell you that Ukraine's treatment of minority citizens has been abysmal ever since the breakup of the USSR (there were problems there during the USSR as well, of course).

However this does not give Putin, or any other neighbouring country, the right to invade and all willy-nilly demand territories from Ukraine.

With that said, the whole mistreatment of Russian nationals/ethnics was way overblown by the Russian media, and is nothing more than a very, very unstable casus belli...

[–] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 3 points 10 hours ago

However this does not give Putin, or any other neighbouring country, the right to invade and all willy-nilly demand territories from Ukraine.

Almost as if it is possible for two bad things to be happening at once at the same time, without it meaning that one of them is actually a good thing now.

I'm reminded of the run-up to the 2nd Iraq War, near enough to the dawn of the mainstream internet that there was one Iraqi blogger who was well-known in the West. He was kind of a minor celebrity and people read him attentively to figure out what the reality was like for people in Iraq, up to and including the beginning of the war. One thing that he said that always stuck with me was, more or less: Yes, things are bad here. Some of the things the US is saying are true. But it is INSANE to think that anyone here wants the US to invade to "save" us from any of it, or that there's any chance that it will make anything any better. It will make things ten times worse. It's insane to me that people who are supposed to be qualified at world events are saying that the US is trying to "help," or that anyone wants this or will "welcome as liberators" the people coming to bomb our cities and make our government even worse.

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 12 hours ago

I mean Russia isn't famous for mistreating ethnic minorities. That would be hilarious.

Those are Asian and that's why no one cares.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Agreed. Sadly there is little more human than to discriminate and have prejudice against those different from you. Especially when the relationship was previously reversed as it was.

But as you said, it was always a flimsy false pretense.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 11 points 14 hours ago

This is wacky on so many levels

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 8 points 13 hours ago

I'm not eager for European and possibly Canadian troops to die, but if there was ever a time to go to war for a just cause, this is it.

Fuck America, Fuck Russia, fascism will not win this war.

[–] einfach_orangensaft@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

quite sure that everything that that user and its alt accounts posts is bait...they probably compiling a list of people who are agreeing in the comments or something because this is even to flat and to stupid to be real propaganda

[–] cm0002@infosec.pub 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It would be a pretty hilarious plot twist if true lol, sadly I don't have much faith in that. If you go to other Tankie places, it's pretty in line with what gets posted there. Even dessalines has been known to post a meme in the same vain (they even posted a NK praise meme couple months back, iirc it was one of those "apology form" meme templates)

[–] jingoistards_gtfo@sh.itjust.works 0 points 37 minutes ago

Don't you have like 4 alt accounts?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Wow. That's wild even by the lofty standards of our exalted friends over on .ml.
