Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

why censor a swear!!!1!!1!!1!

[–] sunoc@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 days ago (2 children)

OP having an absolute meltdown over that comment

Are you okay buddy?

[–] Draegur@lemmy.zip 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

OP's frenzied litany endeared me toward them all the more and i enjoyed that they put it there. mood, fam. MOOD.

[–] stray@pawb.social 6 points 4 days ago

I'm possibly more annoyed by people asking OP why they'd censor a swear than OP, so the rant was very therapeutic. How can you even use software like this and be so unaware of reposting?

[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

crashing out over a swear is wild

[–] KyuubiNoKitsune@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah but it's bullshit censorship by big American corporations to pander to their conservative supporters.

Fucking sign of our times where speech is no longer free.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 12 points 4 days ago

Precisely this. Swear, or don't, but don't censor shit for advertisers.

Have we lost the fine art of grawlixing?

Yeah I think that time has passed, old timer 😔

[–] Draegur@lemmy.zip 49 points 4 days ago (3 children)

i looooooooooooove receiving the hyperfixation infodumps SO MUCH <3

holy shit i could listen for HOURS to someone talk about how grass grows if they're passionate enough about it.

Someone's interest in a subject tells you a lot about who they are! I want to KNOW them!

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It really depends on the topic for me. Friend who's whole world is MTG and can talk about it for days on end? I humor them as long as I can but I am not into deck builders and my mind goes numb. Girlfriend who has enough deep medical knowledge to test right out of a premed program? Incredibly enriching, like listening to a satisfying podcast, sit me in a comfy chair and feed it to my ears. But I always do listen, because I infodump too.

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's too bad there aren't more folks like you around my town.

I agree, even if I have absolutely no basis or understanding of the subject, give me all the info damnit!

My wife is the same. I create a lot of hot air, so we go with each other like creamy peanut butter and extra crunchy peanut butter.

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I once listened to an autistic girl infodump me for six hours straight, I do not regret a single second of it :3

[–] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

bad at conversations? just let the other one talk, win win situation. :3

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago

As long as there's a well cared for cat I'm happy :3

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fist of all, how dare you.

But also, when you info dump a bunch of shit you're excited to talk about, and he tunes it out, then he comes back at you two weeks later to ask if you knew about this really cool shit he refused to talk about two weeks ago

I get infodumps on a regular basis from my girlfriend but when I start telling her about stuff that I'm interested I usually get some variation of "I don't want to hear about this right now". It gets old.

[–] guy@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That sounds unhealthy mate

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah... There are things about her that I've never had in an SO that I don't want to go without but there are other things that drive me crazy. Historically I have a tendency to put up with stuff like that from attractive women. Also not healthy.

[–] guy@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah well. Time to have a talk about it with your SO. :)

[–] toeblast96@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

and ill listen to every second😈😈😈

passionate diatribes by people who know they're stuff is always interesting.

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I wish I knew the difference between info- and trauma-dumping in the moment, but it takes a while for it to register due to my own autism. I unfortunately have only experienced the latter.
Also, that spoiler is funny.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

I think the largest difference is whether you're excited or upset when infodumping

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I wonder if they want me to shut up...

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 4 points 4 days ago

I miss these kinds of conversations with my cat

Is the t lowercase? "SHIt"??

e: omfg It's all lowercase. I don't know why I was expecting caps.
