Not only is the stereotypical depiction of 'The Monster' as a dumb brute...

But also like... he's very slow physically, lumbering like a barely animate oaf, just strong, like a big dumb orc.

Meanwhile, in the book... he's practically Superman.

He just accidentally finds out he can lift boulders single handedly,

“I found a huge rock, which I could lift with one hand."

... he can easily outrun pursuers on foot,

"I fled through a long and winding path, my feet scarcely touching the ground."

... he basically just runs away into the fucking Alps, just starts climbing cliff faces; no gear, can withstand the wind and cold basically fine:

"I climbed a rocky mountain, over which I had never passed before; my strength was renewed as I ascended.”

Yeah, Link, in BotW?

His stamina meter depletes as he climbs a cliff.

"The monster"?

His stamina recharges from climbing fucking mountains.

The last time he is seen, he jumps out of the cabin window of a large ship, surrounded by icebergs, in the fucking Arctic Ocean, lands on something like a small raft or ice chunk, and then just... disappears into the distance.

Can you jump 20 feet down, stick the landing on a fucking ice chunk, and then just... stand there, as you drift away toward your own post final monologue, self imposed suicide?

... And that's after he's been being pursued by this ship for like weeks, as he is apparently just actually hopping, running and leaping between icebergs, or something like that.

~120 years before Superman and the Fortress of Solitude.

That book is bone-chilling scary. I couldn't get past him running around the woods and I had to put it away. It's similar to The Standing, but I could finish The Standing.

Actually acknowledges fear from reading. Kudos.

And he learned French by living in a coal shed and eavesdropping on a French family who had been forced to flee France. And then the gorgeous Arabian woman shows up with servants in tow.

Posted this a few weeks ago after my first read. That book is nuts!
