Unrelated to this update but maybe related to Proton, I got a message before loading one of my games today DX9 was out of date. I'm guessing when that happens there's nothing I can do except update Proton?

Something got messed up with that wine environment, swapping versions may fix it, otherwise delete the wine environment from .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/ and launch the game again. It'll create a fresh environment.

This can also sometimes happen if you did a system update which included graphics driver updates but haven't restarted yet.
