Cool kids would compose their own monophonic ringtones with the built–in composer utility.

The worst were those scam ringtone subscriptions that were hard to cancel.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

Were there any legit ones? I thought they were all scammy subscriptions

The 99c ringtone I purchased was Candy Shop by 50 cent. It wasn't even an MP3, it was a polyphonic version.

I lost the phone not long after.

True, I normally have violent, physical reactions to other people's taste in music.

it's not someone's taste in music, it's music that was forced in public spaces for the entirety of 00s.

I'm pretty sure that if you were forced to listen to the music that was my "taste in music" back then over a thousand times every time you left the house, you'd have a visceral reaction too.

What? You don't want to lick the lollipop?

Was it a Nokia 3200? I swear that was the phone for polyphonic ringtones.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Loads of them had it.

Source: made games for ol' phones back in the day.

It was definitely a Nokia. You were mad to use anything else back in the day, although I did move to Windows Mobile before the iPhone and then Android were released.

I didn't buy any ringtones but I did buy and finish mega man 2 on my razr.

I remember thinking we had reached peak technology playing Pac Man on my flip phone in 9th grade.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 4 points 1 month ago

I grew up in the mp3 era, like fuck I was going to pay actual money for my phone to play a short sound clip when I got a call.

Instead I spent money to get a USB to whatever proprietary connector the phone had (that was specific to that phone), found a converter that would do wav -> whatever weird format ringtones needed to be in, figured out where in the filesystem that file needed to be, and then I had my FF7 battle music ring tone.

And these days, despite it being a lot easier, I just haven't bothered setting a custom ringtone. Where did I use to find the time to care about that shit?

I think I bought like one that I used for years. 2 max.
