Scissor just straight up “fuck it we ball” with a shiv and a prosthetic hatchet arm is pretty metal.

Retiarius, because cheap tricks are fun.

[–] eighty@aussie.zone 8 points 2 months ago

"cheap" is sore loser talk for optimal - nothing but net 🏀

[–] Ryktes@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cestus! Put my money on the boy who walks into a swordfight straight throwin hands.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

Put 'em up!

Secutors have always been my favorite. I love their fish-man helmets.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Interesting enough, there's symbolism there! Both the Murmillo and Secutor have fish motifs about them, and were often paired up against the Retiarius - fish against fisherman!

Trax, that feather is stylish

[–] Salatbart@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago

Is this pre-rock? If so, scissor would be extremely op

It does seem the most practical.

[–] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I remember seeing a claim that Trax used to destroy Murmilo, because the big shield was a hindrance in one on one combat. The speed and agility of the smaller shield was much better. The big shields worked well in units to make a shield wall, but less so in an arena

I'm not actually very well-versed on gladiators, because it's one aspect of Roman history that doesn't fascinate me, for whatever reason - but I do know for sure that there were certain 'pairings' of gladiator types that were considered uneven (and thus all the more fun to bet on).

Trident and net. It has more range than the other options.

[–] chug-capture-ahoy@piefed.social 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

i don’t know but I would run like a miserable creature

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Retiarius, got it!

(One of the legitimate tactics of the Retiarius - and why it was sometimes seen as the least 'manly' of the gladiator types - was simply to evade their heavier opponent until their opponent was exhausted)

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ask that big dead guy whether he'd rather be manly or alive

[–] tja@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

The answer might surprise you!

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 3 points 2 months ago

He's called thusly because he retreats

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Retiarius, gimme that net and trident

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

Secutor specially designed to fight retrarii. I'll have all your tridents.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I hate them all. Dunno what it is about a couple of thousand years that makes people fail to recognize the humanity of others, the horror and atrocity.

[–] Coopr8@kbin.earth 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Murmillo has the most styling helm, so I'm going for that.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago
[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Both middle, bottom left, all seem interesting.
