Interesting history (recent) of "saving" the GBR. The anecdote about Unions halting the exploration for oil and gas back in the day.

The puch is in the last two paragraphs.

Unfortunately, “saving” the reef doesn’t just have to be done once. All coral reefs face human threats: fishing, coastal development and declining water quality. But these pale compared to the big one – climate change. As intense marine heatwaves multiply, coral bleaches over large areas and can die.

In the 1960s, conservationists fought hard to stop oil and gas on the reef. Their campaign eventually succeeded. But the reef couldn’t escape the damage done by the oil and gas extracted and burned everywhere else. Saving the reef is going to be even harder this time round.

Really great article, the twists of fate around these issues are so interesting. I bet the Fraser government was relieved to come in at a point where they could draw a political line under the issue.

I imagine the only real and required defence for coral systems now is large scale mitigation programs.

I think i posted about the misting cannon a few months ago, but its technology like this and a thousand other programs that Australia need to ramp up. Too many impacts of climate change on reef systems are already locked in, to ignore and hope they pull through.

We now have to protect this resource, if for nothing else but the protection of the supply chain of resources that eventually lead to humans. But also, you know, its a fucking natural wonder and we should be responsible little monkeys about this shit.
