Dear rural USA citizens: you voted to harm yourselves. I'm sorry you did that.

My wife's rural Idaho family:

  • Parents live off Social Security and Medicare. Dad drives a dump truck during the summer and gets laid off every winter when it freezes. He files for unemployment and that's their income until the construction company starts back up after the thaw.

  • Sister who's a CNA at the VA. She's already seen the robot they're going to use to replace CNAs. Has 2 adult sons who live at home and dropped out of high school. The oldest just sits at home smoking weed and playing video games with his live-in girlfriend. She has another son still in school, we'll online "school", who I'm sure won't graduate either.

  • Sister with 1 son in prison and the other has Cerebral PA Sy. They live off Medicaid, welfare, SSI, and the tiny stipend she gets from being his caregiver. In the 22 years I've known her, she's had 1 part-time job as a teacher's assistant for 2 years.

They all vote straight R and are deep MAGA.

All chock full of opinions, deeply bereft of facts

Despite how devastated I am by this I have so much trouble feeling sorry for NPR and PBS. They've spent the last 10 years sane washing Donald Trump. They contributed to this. Ironically their failure to be what Donald Trump calls them is why they're being destroyed. Maybe if they had a little bit more journalistic integrity things would be different. Probably not but it'd be better at least.

“PBS and NPR were chartered to provide objective journalism,” Bozell wrote. “Instead, we got drag shows for kids, gushing coverage of Democrats, and silence or smears for conservatives.”

This is that “reality has a liberal bias” hitting hard. PBS and NPR are the only forms of media that still abide by the fairness doctrine and present an actual “both sides”. No matter how ludicrous one side may be, they still do their best to present it in a way that sounds like it isnt insane. Their only loyalty is to presenting information in a way that doesnt align with any particular bias.

So when they present both sides as level-ly as possible it isnt insane enough for far right nutjobs who are used to gargling fox news all day, even though it certainly doesnt treat far right perspectives nearly as harshly as it should (given the facts of reality).

At the end of the day, this a death knell for the truth in an already post-truth era. Fuck all the assholes that voted for this and fuck this country in general at this point, honestly
