Fascist culture

[–] frezik@midwest.social 56 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We don't want a warrior culture. That's dumb fashy shit. We want a culture where every time soldiers are sent to war, it's seen as a failure of leadership that it got to this point.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 24 points 10 months ago (1 children)

literally one of the biggest components of sun tzus art of war is exactly that.

"the supreme art of war is to subdue your enemy without fighting"

essentially, if you have an enemy, and can work things out democratically, or in other non violent ways, then you win. if you cannot do that, you have failed, and have to wage a traditional war, which is costly to both sides. and thus should be avoided.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 6 points 10 months ago

Asimov also had this concept baked into the foundation series. "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent".

These people wouldn't know what warrior culture is if it came in and punched them in the face. Ancient Greeks hoplites were gay as shit and they were some of the finest warriors in the world.

Homosexuality in the militaries of ancient Greece was a significant aspect across the ancient Greek city-states, ranging from being a core part of military life to being an accepted practice of some individual soldiers. It was regarded as contributing to morale. Although the primary example is the Sacred Band of Thebes, a unit said to have been formed of same-sex couples, the Spartan tradition of military heroism has also been explained in light of strong emotional bonds resulting from homosexual relationships. Various ancient Greek sources record incidents of courage in battle and interpret them as motivated by homoerotic bonds.

The Spartans also missed like two wars because they landed on easy to predict holidays that perverted them from being there in time, so they tended to over sell the times they did make it to war.

Too bad his name wasn’t Harvey Whiskey. There’d be no shot of having it renamed by Pete in that case.

Or tell him that if you combine into one fleet the USS Harvey Milk, the USS Morgan Rum and the USS Runny Yolk, you get eggnog!

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 26 points 10 months ago (2 children)

America is a fascist, racist, homophobic, bully, anti-intelligence culture.

Sacrifice your neighbours at the altar of prosperity in pursuit of the holy me.

[–] snausagesinablanket@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Except that its less than 1/3 of us that feel that way. Its a big shit sandwich and we all have to take a bite here.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

That's how It starts 👍

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

There's some pretty good restaurants tho.

[–] andyburke@fedia.io 25 points 10 months ago

This dude is hopelessly fucking stupid.

The very nature of warfare is changing at an unbelievable rate (supply chain attacks, drones manufactured in theater, just to name a couple) and this guy is fucking obsessed with transgender and gay people.

If you're conservative and you voted for these guys, and you give any kind of shit about America, you need to start yelling at your reps about this bullshit to get someone with at least some baseline fucking competency in there.

I didn't vote for this bullshit. My city didn't. My state didn't. Y'all in the red states need to step up.

[–] loopedcandle@lemmynsfw.com 21 points 10 months ago

Renaming a ship is really bad luck, IIRC. And sailors are hilariously superstitious. So if they rename it after some conservative anti-gay asshat (narrator: they will) that the ship is going to be the most despised ship in the fleet.

The thing is, Drinky Pete, we can't go back to live in the 1950s. We already don't live there because of the whole forward-motion thing of time, and so going back isn't going to work.

So maybe work a little harder to drink yourself to death.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

Maybe if we all ship him a bottle...

[–] DeathsEmbrace@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

Just wait until they see the “warriors” in history.

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Why aren't they saying whose name is going in its place?

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Because they aren't announcing it until june 13.

The renaming of the ship was set to become public on June 13, the memo said. While a new name for the Milk has not been announced, the memo said Hegseth and Phelan are set to make the announcement aboard the oldest commissioned ship in the Navy, the USS Constitution.

[–] dunidane@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Sad to see the constitution used to spread such hate. But I guess her namesake has gotten the same treatment forever.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It’s a warship. Literally built to spread hate.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Anything built to fight the British Empire is based as shit... At least before 1930.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Constitution was built to fight pirates and the Fr*nch.

[–] dunidane@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 10 months ago

That was her first duties but when the original 6 frigates were built the British were the enemy on everyone's mind. Thats why they were so heavy gunned for frigates of their day. They could only budget for 6 and knew they would have to duke it out with the Royal Navy.

[–] 7empest@beehaw.org 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's gonna be the USS Taco isn't it..

[–] taco@piefed.social 1 points 10 months ago
[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

They seem to be spending a whole lot of energy on stuff that really isn't practically important

[–] FreakinSteve@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yea but I also have a job, and a wife and dog that would suffer if I martyred myself, even if I only wound up in prison. I think a lot of people look at the situation and see the same hopelessness, and can only hope for it not to get worse, because chances are if we do nothing, we won't lose everything, but not the same if we do choose to do something.

"First they came for the..."

I agree, but I don't have a better answer. I empathize like hell with my queer friends, I understand the fear, but what am I going to accomplish alone with a rifle and how likely is it that a legitimate militia could be established before being wiped out, and how would it even be organized?

I think it has to start with the military. I think if a large enough chunk of soldiers and materiel defected, enough for a fighting chance, that civilians would join in droves. But I don't really know, that's just what I've come to think.

[–] FreakinSteve@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Dont take on an army Hunt the MAGA pastor, the christofascist YT host, the local TikToc fascist influencer. Know where all the cops live. The US military is too big for lone wolves and can't do anything about guerillas.

[–] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I know it's dumb, and it's not the point, and fascists don't care what they're saying as long as they get their way but part of me still needs to answer this

liking other men doesn't impact your ability to do violence. Gay people can also be violent. You know that right, you stupid piece of fascist shit?

[–] Zannsolo@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Liking men is extra manly. Guys the movie 300 about, loved fucking other dudes.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 months ago

"Warrior culture - it's turned out so well for the Russian military, let's do it to ours!"

[–] andybytes@programming.dev 4 points 10 months ago

Fuck these d bags

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 10 months ago

That's just fucking petty.

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

“Warrior culture” on the fuel tanker crewed mainly by civilians

[–] paddythegeek@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago

What a bunch of bullshit.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 10 months ago

Loser culture.
