remember the early 90s and how like everything causes cancer? I remember even reading burnt toast causes cancer. Everything was cancer in those days

Its bad journalistic reporting.

Study "we tested if burned food contains carcinogens. We used bread as our test medium and found elevated carcinogens in the burnt bread compared to properly toasted and untoasted bread, leading to a slight increase in exposure to carcinogens and slightly increases the chance of cancer."

The reporting and editorial: "BURNT BREAD CAUSES CANCER! MORE AFTER OUR SPONSOR FOR DEPRESSION MEDICINE!"

Did people actually believe that

You won't die right away but supposedly digesting food causes the digestive tract to draw in more blood, leaving less for the muscles used in swimming and increasing the risk for cramps and fatigue.

No, it's rubbish. They tell you that because if you're a kid and you eat and then go do some vigorous exercise you're likely to be sick which means everyone has to get out of the pool and a lowly employee has to clean it up.

Fair enough, I learned that as a kid. I do remember reading some recommendation to not do it from the german national lifeguard association as well though.

Lifeguards really don't want to be skimming your puke out of the pool
