These box screens are real it's called The Cave, I've seen one in person and it's actually a very convincing 3D effect with the tracking and they render it for your perspective

Reminds me of the show upload. That show started as this future Utopia and turned into a dystopia the moment you saw the wider world and how the technology was being used

VR dev: Guilty, I've had this thought. Wasting power to play games or just chill in vr is... suboptimal. especially while we still have an ecosystem we can enjoy in many places.
