Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

Just upgraded my laptop from 16GB to 64GB RAM. It's amazing!

I also have a hard drive upgrade planned but will try a different OS this time, so needs a bit more planning (going from Nobara to Bazzite). Will be going from 1TB to 4TB storage.

That's a nice upgrade! Haven't seen the need to go past 16GB on my laptop or 32GB on my desktop. Although I don't really do anything that demanding any more.

Sometimes I need to open Firefox and Jetbrains IDE at the same time, and then my laptop chokes.

I have all sorts of background programmes, docker containers, and typically 5-10 foreground programs open. My laptop doesn't like me 😅. Or it does now, that I just increased the RAM by x4!

Is it me or is it suddenly winter?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's definitely been colder this week, though metservice is saying it'll be a bit warmer again next week here in Hamilton.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Yeah I was in the Waikato (where it felt super cold) and now I'm back it's suddenly cold up here too.

Just like that, we've been waiting 6 months for summer to come and instead we get winter. Maybe you were lucky up your way but we didn't get a summer down here aside from some isolated days.

That sounds really annoying, sorry to hear that.

We had a nice gentle summer, not very hot but that's great for someone like me who has thermoregulation issues. Came back after a week away and now I'm feeling very dissatisfied with my t shirt drawer ha ha.

So glad the southerly is diminishing away!

Stink week in the health restructure - I really can't wait for the next election to come around.

I've been listening to Lankum lately, which has been a different change of pace.

A much nicer day today! It sucks about the health restructure, I know people working there and hear some crazy stories about a lack of staff, even (especially?) the front lines.

Bandcamp Friday is still on for the next few hours. Anything you buy, the artist gets the Bandcamp cut!

There are a bunch of NZ artists on there. Alien Weaponry, Phoenix Foundation, Fly my pretties, Flight of the concordes, Liam Finn, Salmonella dub, etc.

Anyone else got recommendations?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I missed friday but if you like really mellow alt try the Floral Clocks https://thefloralclocks.bandcamp.com/

Unfortunately the next one isn't until August, but I did manage to grab some stuff. I picked up Te Rā by Alien Weaponry, I couldn't resist after they came third in the global Lemmyvision competition 😆

I don't know that really mellow alt is my thing in general, though I'd listen in the right context. I'm more into 90s rock or adjacent, though enjoy specific songs from a wide range of genres.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Their lyricist is this guy.

Wait, Te Ra came third in Lemmyvision?! That's so awesome!!!!! I see I have some catching up to do!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Their lyricist is this guy.

Wow, ok now I want to listen!

Wait, Te Ra came third in Lemmyvision?!

Mau Moko did, yeah! Here's the Lemmy.nz post, which links the original announcement.

Thanks!

Well that's my need for new songs to listen to sorted for this week! Lemmyvision is awesome.

Hey did you notify tell Alien Weaopnry that they took out the bronze? 😄

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I didn't, but they are from Northland, think you can let them know next time you pop around for a cuppa?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

This being NZ I have driven behind their van a couple of times. I guess if I see it again we should start madly flashing the headlights and signalling them to stop so I can share the good news.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Do it!

And ask them why they don't have an official Lemmy account 😆

Definitely haken, was looking at catching up on stuff I've missed like affinity and virus.

Something a little more metals orientated but still high art: https://neobliviscaris.bandcamp.com/

For something a lot less full-on maybe https://andygibson.bandcamp.com/music

Or folkey dark stuff https://lankum.bandcamp.com/album/false-lankum
