Hahahahaha. That’s hilarious and a good idea. Since it seems you have to pay to be put on this site, you know they’re genuine entries.

Sounds more like a scam to bilk their base out of even more money, which is on-point.

Reminds me of an old scam where you got a letter saying you were one of the smartest people in the country, and they wanted to include you in their book of smartest people. Except you had to pay and buy a copy of the book to be included.

(Something like that, anyway. If anyone recalls the details more clearly, please share).

So many times I’ve thought fuck it, why don’t I get in on the grifting? Damn conscience getting in the way of potential riches.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 14 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I know, right? I'd be really good at it, too, except for not being able to actually allow myself to do it.

Edit: How's this?

We mail letters to every registered R in the country. The letter tells them they're one of the top Patriots in the US. We would love to include their name in the big Book of Patriots so everyone will know how much of a patriot they are. There is a processing fee of $60. But, we will waive that fee if they buy a copy of the book for $75. And why wouldn't they want to buy a copy of a book they're in? They're also excellent gifts.

$150 to include a photo!

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

That's not even fraud. There's nothing unethical about it.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I mean, it is if I have no intention of mailing them a book lol.

Best they'll get is a Word doc posted to Sharepoint or something.

In the old scam, I believe you world indeed get a book with the names of everyone who paid to get a book with the names of everyone who paid to get the book.

It's the "who's who" grift.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The whole vanity publishing industry works like that. Yes, there is such an industry. There's a highly accurate, slightly satiric and utterly confusing book about it, named "Il pendolo de Foucault" by Umberto Eco. (Probably something like "Foucault's Pendulum" in English). If it weren't that excessively long and the plot less complex I'd highly recommend it.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 5 points 2 years ago

I have actually read that entire book. I second that recommendation.

[–] grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 years ago

I used to get letters from Who's Who among American High School Students. Wikipedia has a write-up about that category of questionable practice.

I've used similarly-titled books from the late 1800s/early 1900s for research, but nowadays we have the Internet.

Who’ who

This was the one we would get in the mail once every couple of years. They come and go under different ownership, but it will never die for human vanity is a renewable resource.

[–] boydster@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

This happened with my sister and I think it was for poetry. At least, the version of it my parents fell for was for poetry writing. They might have run this scam for any number of things for all I know

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 years ago

Oh man this is gold. Not just for boycott, but just to help minimize dealing with idiots on a financial level.

I skimmed a bunch of businesses. From what I saw, most can be broken down into

  • Construction
  • Automotive
  • Beauty
  • Insurance

From their About page, it's always fascinating to read how much dogwhistle coded language they put in there to make sure you know this site isn't run by or for those people:

For far too long, American consumers and business owners who cherish family values

No gays here!

and God-given liberty

This is a Christian country, and if you don't like it, you can geeeeee-it outt.

have been overlooked by mainstream businesses.

More like "Lamestream," amirite, guys?? ...Guys?

Despite their numbers and purchase power,

We conservatives are the majority, not those coincidentally, definitionally minorities!

they have lacked an economic ecosystem that truly aligns with their priorities.

The globalist economy isn't hateful enough to the things we hate, this makes us sad because we really want to feel aligned.

It’s time to embrace this community of customers and merchants by providing platforms, products, and services that enrich the way of life they hold dear.

We needed to very carefully adapt "way of life" from David Duke so people know we mostly almost completely don't 100% mean the white christian way of life. Well, let's just make sure we add extra photos of only white babies on the site so people get the message. Nailed it.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 years ago

Thought there were just no businesses near me.... then I hit the automotive category lol.

[–] Freshparsnip@lemm.ee 13 points 2 years ago

Reminds me of using the One Million Moms website, that tries to warn people away from LGBT media, as a list of suggestions for LGBT friendly media

[–] credo@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Make sure you leave a yelp (or whatever) review.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Just checked for local restaurants, and sure enough there's a few in my area. I haven't eaten at any of them, but now I know not to.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You should let them know why.

[–] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Nah. Just let them suffer and wonder.

[–] zenpocalypse@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

"I signed up for this site but my numbers keep dropping and the new people we get are huge assholes to the wait staff."

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Spread the word and do your best to shut down the MAGAts.

[–] RangerJosey@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

Love to see it.

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 4 points 2 years ago

I really think that some of those products would be very easy to avoid
