When the hotel costs you your freedom and still comes with slavery

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Isn't that a screengrab from one of the muppets films? You can even see Kermit in the center

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah. It's from Muppets: most wanted, I believe

Must be a US thing. There are great hotels for 40€/night in many places. I went to one for 30€/night in Florence and it was marvelous. Couldn't understand a word the old lady said, but she was very helpful showing us where everything was and getting us settled into the quiet room with high ceiling and large closets. There was a pizzeria about 20 metres from the hotel that had an agreement with the hotel to give a discount for hotel guests. The coffee in the morning was free and terrific too. Only a stone's throw away was a great restaurant with a veranda where they served fantastic home-made bread and small cakes.

The worst "hotel" I was at was definitely in the US. Terrible shithole of a place we had booked ahead of time. Could've been a beggars home in Calcutta. And we had already paid, so no refunds.

Yes, our US hotel industry has mostly been monopolized by Wyndham and a few other companies. They all build large hotels with the same layout. If you try and go under that price point you get stuck with motels, which have mostly been phased out by our culture from taboo & cleanliness anecdotes. Definitely a far fetch from the experience in Europe and other places. The closest we get is Airbnb like set-ups of personal homes rented out.

That explains the meme. Thank you for the context.

I feel like someone my age wrote this because hotels are not around $100 anymore. Last concert i went to that was sufficiently far away to justify getting a room for the night, said room was over $200, tiny, and literally the cheapest in the building.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

maybe in urban areas, but rural hotels can easily still be $90 for a cheap one.

source: i drive cross country a lot.

i feel weird. a few years ago i got a room for like 150 in a hcol area, downtown, on a holiday, during a festival, within walking distance of the festival, and i kind of felt like i was robbing the place. they could have charged twice that and gotten away with it. sometimes you just get lucky

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

It really depends. Holiday Inn Express can run close to 115-125 depending on location and nearby events. And there are certainly a lot of hotels under 100.

But if you're anywhere near a decent metro under 100 is basically non-existent

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Wow, that is an awful price for something like that, maybe it was adjusted for the concert? Check if booking for a longer period actually makes it cheaper

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Depends where and when. Wife and I hit up the Niagara Falls casinos in January and rooms are cheap and give you a lot of freebies

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Hotwire is still pretty good and you can sometimes keep it around $100. You may also have been dealing with higher pricing due to an event in the area. But you're also right that everything is more expensive.

When the hotel is a hostel:

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

I don't know about that.

More like most hostel users have have giant backpacks, many are tourists, and one really huge creep that wants to sell your liver. And the party is a Quiz game at 8pm to meet every other tourist.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Really depends on the hostel

Some are like "it's 10pm, so better shut the fuck up" and others be like "it's 1:30, the night is just starting - let's pump up the volume!"

But more often than not, it's the more chill kind. Although there are still party hostels out there.
By now I'm probably also too old for that and appreciate a few hours of good sleep.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

I exaggerate a little, but the socializing was the best part of the hostels I stayed at. Built-in interesting people to meet. I miss traveling. :(

as someone who has worked in both kinds of hotels: can confirm, this meme is spooky accurate; below $100 and the usual mixture of drug addicts, prostitutes, and general "people bringing fucking issues" come out of the woodwork.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

That's the same psychological effect like 9.95 for a product versus 10.00 I guess.

Is that the singer from Nickelback in the lower panel left corner?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah well Bob might have a promising career in the music industry.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Please go watch Twin Peaks. It’s one of the best TV shows ever!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

It's THE best TV show ever. I can't imagine what my life would look like had it never existed. I basically moved to the pnw solely because of this show lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Seen Twin Peaks, watched it through twice over the years. Nickelback singer did not have a cameo appearance.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I really appreciate the effort you put in, here. Also, I thought the Nickelback guy was Dax Shepard for a minute.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Every time I do it makes me laugh.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As someone who works in a job where they'll only ever book cheap hotels, I can confirm.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Construction or archeology?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Fucking Bob shows up. One hundo it is.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago
