Used to be me, but I've come to the conclusion that asshole control freaks are tirelessly aggressive & will always find a way to undermine whatever system decent, tolerant people come up with. I'm certain even a system modeled after the paradox of intolerance can ultimately be destroyed by assholes determined enough to do so.

I agree but I think the optimism bit comes from hope or determination rather than rational analysis. We can’t accept that this is the best we can do so we proceed with efforts to improve the situation even though the hurdles seem too high. Better to make an attempt to turn the train (potentially fruitlessly) than to just let it hurl you into the wall.

Of course. I've just run out of steam to fight it, while it seems they never do. It honestly seems cyclical:

  1. They doggedly work to take over until they actually manage to do so, but ultimately destroy themselves because they're never satisfied and/or too paranoid about losing control.

  2. Decent people rebuild from the ashes, trying to make sure what went before doesn't happen again. Things eventually become okay again for a while.

  3. Good people become complacent and less vigilant, so the bullies start taking advantage and manipulating their way into power again - leading back to step one.

Guess where we are.

Mid step one :( Very frustrating but we take turns with the motivation so people can rest.
