Synology was my gateway to self-hosting. I agree that now, with the knowledge I’ve gained, they are overpriced, but for a “NAS with training wheels” I can’t think of much better for people with the money to spend.

I think there’s a place for Synology and I’d like to imagine with such a resounding amount of feedback, they’re going to avoid the proprietary crap for a while at least. I’m not saying they’re a good company or that they deserve praise for backtracking on a stupid idea, but at least I’m not as reluctant to recommend them as I was.

Trust is hard to earn, but easy to lose - I'd be very careful to trust my data with a company that's willing to play these games.

They've been caught lying before when they introduced the branded drives requirement, but it was too obvious to not see through it. Their backtracking was pure damage control.

Trusting your data with a company that's just waiting for the right opportunity to extract money from you is not something I'd do. I'd consider their devices time bombs and would take measures to not be impacted when they hold your data hostage. I'm not saying this will happen, their made it very obvious that the risk is there.

Yeah they've played their hand. I will never buy from them again, even if they do somehow repent (which is exceedingly unlikely). Once a company gets to a point to where they start monitizing things with no value, they will never turn back.

Their base hardware besides these upgrades also ballooned in price. It's beyond a joke for what paltry hardware you get for your money from Synology now. I can and did buy 3rd party ECC RAM for mine. Works fine besides the singular snotty "how dare you" notification you get on a reboot.

In the past sure I would've said go for it on "last years model" which had steep discounts during holiday seasons, but they went to shit even before the AI plague.
