This is a community for promoting sustainability in tech and computing. This includes: understanding the impact that our tech/computing choices have on the environment; purchasing or re-using devices that are sustainable and repairable; how to properly recycle or dispose of old devices when it is beyond use; and promoting software and services that allow us to reduce our environmental impact in the long term, both at work and in our personal lives.

This isn't a competition, it's a reminder to stay grounded when making your decisions. Remember: The most sustainable device is the one that you are already using.

I have an old laptop that I'd like to get rid of. I've repurposed its SSD and RAM. It has an HDD on it, but it's so old, that it probably shouldn't be used anymore. A screw doesn't fit properly, so the chassis is a bit bumpy on one corner. But it works just fine. (Has an 8th gen i7 in it.)

I already have home-servers etc., so I just want to get rid of it. What's the most ethical way of doing it?

I'm currently living somewhere in southern USA, if that's relevant.

Set it to make the Wi-Fi an open access point. Set it to rotate through a list of SSIDs like:

“Find a more ethical shop than Wal·mart”
“Watch out for Walmartians”
“It’s ethical to shoplift evil brands (Nestle, Coke, Pepsi, Kraft, Unilever, P&G)”
“Never show your ID to ICE agents”
“Learn Spanish. Fuck republicans.”

Then find a way to hide it in a wall at Wal·mart, wired to power. (edit) Maybe clean every hair follicle from the keyboard first, and wipe your fingerprints.

Perhaps have a captive portal but with no uplink. One that just redirects to a web server running on the laptop that shows content supporting whatever ethical cause you want to promote.
