I don’t know of any window manager that has particularly bad performance. The more visual effects you enable, the more demanding they will run.

As far as looks go, do you want transparency, blur, animations?

The biggest difference between window managers is how they manage windows, features, configuration, integration with desktop environments, and so on.

That said check out dwm and Compiz Reloaded.
