Hannah Arendt had alot to say on this topic in her 1951 book "The origins of totalitarianism". Its a scary reflection on how and why totalitarian states could arise in the first half of 1900's. Especially eery with the current state of the world are the parts that paints a picture on how easy it can be for truth to become obfuscated and how lies can replace them to become the head-cannon of the masses.
