In Europe, we have Hammer films as well as Italian Giallo films. In the silent era, the German tradition of expressionist cinema with Murnau and Lang produced several classics, as did the swedes (Victor Sjøstrøm) and the danish (Benjamin Christensen). Later, some of these were remade, for instance Klaus Kinski played Nosferatu once (he hardly needed makeup).
