Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

If Mother Earth doesn't kill us, the ICE agents will.

ICE can't kill us all. The climate change our politicians and corporations are resolutely ignoring certainly can.

Even if they do pay attention to it, I think the global consensus is that it wouldn’t matter anyway… we are fucked.

That's not global consensus at all!
That's just what the "we don't want to do anything" crowd pivoted to saying, now that you can't flat out deny the problem anymore.

If it wasn’t the global consensus, green tech would be free, because saving the planet would be more important than profit. Closing down cruise ships, private jets, etc.

The amount of progress we have made is next to nil on a planetary scale.

It’s great to desire it gets figured out, but don’t get your hopes up.

If a country made green tech free, the United States would organize a coup to restore fascism or some other capitalist order loyal to the US.

The world lives in fear of the US military-industrial complex. Even the USSR and China are/were defined by their relationship to the US. The USSR existing under embargo and struggling to support a sufficient military to ward off the US, and China only becoming a comparable power to the US by letting itself become the industrial heart of capitalism for over 50 years.

I am not saying that all the world's woes are the US' fault, I'm saying that ever there is a place in the world without woe, the US is there to rectify that existential threat to its hegemony.

Maybe after the US has finished committing murder-suicide by fascism, those of us who are still alive can start building for the future rather than for profit without fear.
