An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the “ML” influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

the anger comes from the adamant refusal to even admit that there is a problem, let alone do anything to fix the red hot glowing issues.

Let me just state this: police violence makes me furious as well, and it also makes me really frustrated that there are so many people who will defend anything the police does. The solution to that is not jumping to the other extreme. That just deepens the trenches, and holy hell are they deep already.

Better training, more accountability, better conditions to attract more of the right kind of people to the job, I'm all for it. Let's not paint them all with one brush, because many are really in it for the right reasons. Because there's also the cop that spends years investigating a murder so that the perpetrator is caught before the next victim that arises. That finds answers for the family of a missing loved one. That finds that missing loved one. That breaks apart an organized crime ring that regularly assassinated people. Or even that gave that one pissed off person his 14th speeding ticket which made him slow down just enough to avoid a fatal accident. Are those also all bad cops?

So essentially, this:

these changes need to be systemic. they need to change the basics of who how and why police get trained and deployed. that is government reform. that is a voting issue

is exactly the point.

Maybe 1 in a million, that's like an exception to the rule. It is true for every country.

If good cops follow Omerta, not report bad cops, let bad cops get by with breaking laws, don't testify against law breaking amongst them. They are bad cops if not today then potentially tomorrow. Eventually they all turn.
