Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

It smells terribly, exposes others to negative health effects without consent and is one of the biggest causes of littering. Simply put it is a major nuisance with no benefits apart from profits for the tobacco/drug industry and addicts getting their high.

Could probably extend that to anywhere around minors in general too.

And a blanket ban of smoking outdoors, like OP suggests, would still not be a reasonable response.

Although I don't smoke cigarettes, I do vape weed in public when walking my dog in the forest. That hurts absolutely no one other than me. Just ban smoking near others ( which is exactly how it works for weed in my country, and should be how it works for cigarettes as well )

I don't see how me being forced to vape in my apartment and make my entire apartment and all my clothes smell like weed would help anyone

I agree. An all out public ban is not practical

As long as you don’t litter your empty vapes. One of the many problems with cigarettes is the litter. Filters by the millions that never biodegrade

Thats not how vaping weed works. In a dry herb vape you use grinded weed that then gets heated up inside a small oven so the THC evaporates, but most of the other plant matter remains. In the end you are left with some roasted weed which no longer contains THC, and that you can throw in the trash, or simply on the ground since it's plant matter that biodegrades.

The vape itself is expensive af (350€ in my case) and reusable infinitely, especially since mine has a replaceable 21700 battery, so you wouldn't just throw it away.

Disposable vapes containing liquid THC concentrate do exist, but to the best of my knowledge only in Canada and the US. In my country they are illegal to produce, import or sell. (but not illegal to own or use 🤷)

Edit: it's also a lot less smelly than smoking weed. If I'm using it in public you wouldn't be able to even notice it from 10 meters away

Nice. Wish the disposables were illegal here as well.
