Literally, this has been standard US imperialism for the better part of a century.

The US inherited it from the British, there were people already living here. They have been invading sovereign nations in the name of the US since independence.

It is relevant, they were agreeing with your sentiment and extending the timeline by correctly asserting that it goes further back than a century.

When exactly do you think the US colonial rebellion happened?

How is that apparent? And what point do you think you're making exactly? Do you think because they rebelled and started their own empire that somehow negates that they inherited it from the empire they expanded from?
