Some of this depends on whether you have a short haired or a floofy haired pet.
Thankfully we got a short hair. I bought a proper small pet nail trimmer for him, about $15 USD, and he's cool with it. Given his recent tippy taps, he's about due for another nail trim soon..
Edit: I'm guessing every 2 weeks or so for nail clipping, using the proper safeguard trimmer tool anyways.
I'm still learning..
