The Gamers' Tavern is a cozy community talking mainly about gaming but not disdaining other topics, fully committed to the Fediverse and run by an amazing staff (see Staff).

The main goal of the community is providing gamers a cozy and safe home to play together.

The Gamers' Tavern won't ever feed you ads or sell your data, we are against all those BSs and that's why we are active only on Fediverse social medias (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Peertube, Owncast, etc. see the complete list here).

We just want to play together and have fun.

We're discontinuing the hosting of Matrix

Hey everyone. After some thoughts, and then again more thoughts, we decided to discontinue the hosting of our Matrix server at space.gamerstavern.online, and we will shut down the server at the start of December, to allow users who decided to register on our server to register with another server.

While we know that Discord won't be the place where our beloved community will hang out forever due to the enshittification route the company took, we also know that as it is, Matrix isn't an up-to-the-task alternative.

Throughout our self hosting journey we learnt that Matrix has:

  • an often over-complex moderation system and sometimes not up to the task;
  • a far too capillary permission system based on user ownership more than roles or groups;
  • a dev. group that tried to grow too much too fast, hence requiring the founding of a Foundation that took over;
  • deprecation of newly added functionalities (see the slidinc sync protocol) with them not being RCs but signaled as production-ready
  • general lack of basic functionalities;

Overall, what we're looking at, even in the group we're in outside TGT is that it's slowly turning into a ghost town, prone to spam (remember the big episode of a few months ago?)

As always, me and the staff are open to discuss this with anyone who would like to know more.

But, once again, our IRC server is definitely on fire <3
