It's a completely natural reaction, in a war with a major military power, to ask an even greater military power for "help". Nothing seems wiser to me than to protect one's own natural resources and culture from the evil Russians by giving them to the USA instead.

Sigh.

There is the slight detail that Russia is next door and has continuously invaded or threatened invasion for the last 34 years and the US is on the other side of the planet and has 0 interest in a hostile takeover.

They are framing it a “friendly partnership” instead of a hostile takeover. History shows how well that usually goes.
