Privilege? How about it being a lot of work.
Don't make an assumption that I'm middle-class like you are. Been working poor my entire adult life.
Cool. Ive been unemployeed most my adult life through no fault of my own. Thats privalege. Everyones got in in some degree, no one is immune. Understand it and dont look down on others because they havent achieved the things you have.
Not looking down on anyone having a hard time of it, as I've been up and down myself. Grew up on welfarte, so I know full well how rotten poverty in America is.
If not for the fact that I've found my own niche a decade ago and landed a cool modest job in the arts, I'd be unemployed because I'm over 50. (Ageism is a real thing..)
The point being, given how utterly shit the current government is, if someone isn't a white American with an Anglo-Saxon-sounding last name, their safest bet IS to get a passport for identification.
ICE IS throwing American citizens out of the country and disapearing others into detention facilities for months. They're stealing personal effects, and disapearing the identity documents of many OF those same Americans.
(this is why you can get a passport card that can be carried in a wallet, so if you DO get picked up or harassed, you have the legal proof and your actual passport is still safe at home..)
This isn't about some classist shade being thrown, but it's about protection from the worst abuses of the wannabe Fourth Reich assholes infesting Washington DC.
If you gotta jump through flaming fucking hoops, you do it.
Because if you land in that rapacious maw, you'll lose far more than the money you've spent..
I forsee that come the 2026 elections and if there's a blue wave, that Trump will order ICE to pivot to a "Pay to get released" bond scam to shake down the people in the detention centers. Look at how absolutely shitty a person Trump is and at the group of people around him. It wouldn't be out of character for the lot.
This is ALL a grift and a con.
