Well, the early bicycle was invented in 1817 by a German inventor, Karl Drais. It was called "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". He was possibly motivated by experiencing the "year without summer" after the explosion of volcano Tambora in 1815 in the Southern hemisphere, which led to widespread famine and horses starving because lack of food. It is a fascinating story.

And, perhaps needless to say, the modern bicycle is of course a product of countless improvements and further enhancements from inventors all over the world.
