The world we live in isn't just dystopic, it isn't just stupid, trying to describe all the ways it sucks just makes for a really boring story.

Without coffee, half the world ceases to function. So that half is the luxurious half.

People can adapt. Caffeine is not a necessity.

Without caffeine ..... the world would suffer a massive withdrawal .... then everyone would start acting with more clarity and common sense.

It is for capitalism. That or cocaine.

Neither is sanitation or shelter.

For a week or two people would be cranky and then everyone would adjust. Just like anyone who has ever quit caffeine has done.

A cup of coffee has a noticeable effect on my mood and motivation. I drink a cup in the morning whether I like it or not.

See I would call the expensive grades of coffee (specialty coffee, single origin, natural processed, etc) luxury but the vast majority of coffee sold is utility grade.

Similarly for chocolate!

I mean, they're pretty big industries. Can't grow the plants, a lot of people are out of jobs, and not just the farmers...

No. Luxuries are essential to some people. Mainly 2 groups: enslaved providers, and people with medical needs.
