Yup. Everytime you've got a free turn, or if you can just extend a battle without getting too bored, bump those melee character brave levels up.

I haven't grabbed this one yet... I just played WOTL a few months ago. Didn't know if the bug/feature carried over.

It's a feature. It quite literally tells you this in the deep dive "tutorial" menu section. Though notably not so in the in game pop up.
