JB Pritzker, if he becomes president, will do what every Democrat has done for the past 30 years.
Say the right things and continue rolling the progression of fascism forward. What Dems say they support does not matter because they won't do anything meaningful to make it a reality, and when the Schumers and Jeffries of the world do nothing to stop the speedrunning of fascism, all they offer is sternly-worded letters.
I agree Democrats helped pave the way for the presedence of executive overreach. We're seeing Trump take advantage of the path that was laid out before him and taken advantage of little by little by every president that came before him.
Except, like you mention that's also what will happen with any Republican except it will be a full speed locomotive into modern day concentration camps (as we're seeing now) instead of a gradual roll towards executive overreach that lead us here. The system is broken. That's actually something both sides seem to agree on. If we could possibly throw some speed bumps in front of the slow rolling train, we can also work towards building a barrier to stop it in its tracks.
If we can fight disinformation and maintain enough democracy and freedom of information to actually pressure our politicians (which given what just happened with AIPAC, I believe we still can) we may be able to reverse the slow moving choo choo train that set the course for executive overreach and unilateral decision making.
Pressure Congress to:
Overturn Citizens United. If they did it for Roe vs. Wade they can certainly do it for this bullshit that didn't even exist until 2010.
Decrease executive power
Get bipartisan support for a constitutional amendment to enact SCOTUS term limits rather than allowing the next democratic president to begin a never ending precedence of court packing by every new president to one up the president that came before them.
These are not partisan issues. These are things that need to be done if you actually care about keeping America from turning into an authoritarian wasteland regardless of who is in power.
We don't have the power to do any of that. It's the billionaires in the driver's seat at the federal level.
The only power you and I have is local now. That's it.
Like yesterday, when I read about 40,000,000 being kicked off SNAP. I sent some money to one of my local food banks. That's the extent of my power, and yours. JB Pritzker will maintain that power structure and make it worse. There's nothing we can do to change that.
You don't have the power to do that. Congress does.
You have the power and responsibility to campaign for (if you choose) and vote in your best interest (the very least you should do) for a candidate that doesn't support over throwing democracy. That goes for every election from the local level to the president.
From there you have the power and responsibility to pay attention to what those people do, and maintain pressure on every elected official to do what's right for the people over profit because that's literally their only job. When they don't do their job, you should call them out and tell others about it. You have the power to fight disinformation, spread information and ideas, and refuse to shut the fuck up about things that are important to you.
